How to Use

Dosage

Typically 150 mg twice daily (total 300 mg per day). Your doctor might prescribe 110 mg twice daily (total 220 mg per day) if you are over 80, take verapamil, or have a higher risk of bleeding.

Method

Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water, with or without food. Do not break, chew, or open the capsule, as this can increase the risk of bleeding.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 300 mg (two 150 mg capsules) or 220 mg (two 110 mg capsules) as prescribed by your doctor.

  • Bleeding from the nose, stomach, intestines, private parts, or urinary tract (including blood in urine making it pink or red), or under the skin (bruising).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to dabigatran etexilate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe kidney problems, are currently bleeding, have an organ injury that increases bleeding risk (like a stomach ulcer or brain injury), or have a high tendency to bleed.
  • Do not take if you are using other blood thinners (like warfarin) unless your doctor specifically tells you to during a change in treatment.
  • Do not take if you have severe liver problems or a liver disease that could be life-threatening.
  • Do not take if you are taking certain antifungal medicines (ketoconazole, itraconazole), cyclosporine (after organ transplant), dronedarone (for irregular heartbeat), or a combination medicine for Hepatitis C (glecaprevir/pibrentasvir).

  • Do not take if you have a prosthetic heart valve that requires permanent blood thinning.
  • Tell your doctor if you need surgery or a medical procedure, especially those involving the spine (epidural or spinal anesthesia). You may need to stop this medicine temporarily.
  • If you fall or injure yourself during treatment, especially if you hit your head, contact your doctor immediately.
  • If you have antiphospholipid syndrome (an immune system disorder that increases blood clot risk), tell your doctor.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C
