How to Use

Dosage

For preventing blood clots after knee or hip surgery, the typical dose is 220 mg once a day. For preventing stroke due to irregular heartbeat or treating existing blood clots, the typical dose is 150 mg twice a day.

Method

Take the capsule whole with a glass of water, with or without food. Do not break, chew, or empty the capsule, as this can increase the risk of bleeding.

Important

The usual maximum daily dose for adults is 300 mg, but your doctor may prescribe a lower dose based on your health.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Minor bleeding (like nosebleeds or blood in urine/stool), stomach pain, indigestion, loose stools, diarrhea, or nausea.
  • Lower red blood cell count or abnormal liver function tests.
RARE
  • Serious bleeding (e.g., in the brain, from a surgical wound, injection site, or coughing up blood).
  • Severe allergic reactions like difficulty breathing, dizziness, swelling of the face or throat, or a severe itchy skin rash.
  • Lower number of platelets or white blood cells.
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice) due to liver or blood problems, or elevated liver enzymes.
  • Ulcers or inflammation in the stomach or esophagus, acid reflux, or difficulty swallowing.
  • Wound discharge, bruising, itching, or sudden skin changes, hair loss.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to dabigatran etexilate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you are currently bleeding a lot or have conditions that increase your risk of serious bleeding (e.g., stomach ulcer, brain injury or surgery).
  • Do not take if you have severe kidney failure or severe liver disease.
  • Do not take if you are already taking other medicines that prevent blood clotting (like warfarin or heparin), unless your doctor tells you to.
  • Do not take if you are taking certain antifungal medicines (like ketoconazole), medicines for organ rejection (like cyclosporine), certain heart rhythm medicines (like dronedarone), or Hepatitis C medicines (glecaprevir and pibrentasvir).

Use in Elderly Patients
