How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the typical dose is 220 mg once a day (two 110 mg capsules). If you have kidney problems, are over 75, or take certain other medicines, the dose is usually 150 mg once a day. For children, the dose depends on their weight and age.

Method

Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water. Do not break, chew, or open the capsule, as this can increase the risk of bleeding. You can take it with or without food, exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

COMMON
  • A lower amount of a substance in red blood cells (hemoglobin).
  • Abnormal liver test results.
  • Bruising.
  • Nosebleeds.

  • Hair loss.
  • Increased liver enzymes.
  • Allergic skin rash (itchy, red bumps).
RARE
  • Bleeding, including from wounds, injection sites, joints, rectum, genitals, urinary tract (with pink or red urine), or in the brain.
  • Severe allergic reactions, such as trouble breathing, dizziness, or swelling of the face or throat.
  • Stomach or intestinal ulcers (including in the esophagus).
  • Inflammation of the esophagus and stomach.
  • Stomach or abdominal pain.
  • Difficulty swallowing.
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice).
  • Decreased white blood cells (cells that fight infections).
  • Blood in stool (detected by lab tests).
  • Itching.
  • Coughing up blood.
  • Fluid leaking from surgical wounds.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to dabigatran etexilate or any other ingredient.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have severe kidney problems or are currently bleeding.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have a condition that increases your risk of severe bleeding (e.g., stomach ulcer, brain injury).
  • Do not take this medicine if you are taking other blood-thinning medicines, unless your doctor tells you to.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have a mechanical heart valve.
