How to Use

Dosage

For most conditions, the typical adult dose is 300 mg per day, taken as one 150 mg capsule twice daily. For preventing clots after surgery, it's typically 220 mg once a day. Your doctor will tell you the exact dose.

Method

Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water, with or without food. Do not break, chew, or open the capsule, as this can increase the risk of bleeding.

Important

The maximum daily dose for most adults is 300 mg. However, your doctor may prescribe a lower dose based on your health.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Reduced amount of hemoglobin in your blood.
  • Abnormal liver function test results.
  • Bleeding from your nose, stomach, intestines, penis/vagina, or urinary tract (which might show as pink or red urine), or under your skin.
  • Reduced number of red blood cells.
  • Stomach or abdominal pain.
  • Indigestion.
  • Loose stools or diarrhea.
  • Nausea (feeling sick).
  • Vomiting.
  • Bruising or collection of blood after a medical procedure.
  • Allergic skin rash with dark red, raised, itchy bumps.
RARE
  • Bleeding from hemorrhoids, rectum, or in the brain, joints, from surgical cuts, injection sites, or where a catheter connects to a vein.
  • Coughing up blood or bloody mucus.
  • Reduced number of platelets in your blood.
  • Severe allergic reactions, such as difficulty breathing, dizziness, or swelling of the face or throat.
  • Itching.
  • Ulcers in the stomach, intestines, or esophagus.
  • Inflammation of the esophagus or stomach.
  • Stomach acid flowing back into the esophagus (heartburn).
  • Difficulty swallowing.
  • Yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes (jaundice) due to liver or blood problems.
  • Reduced number of white blood cells (which help fight infections).
  • Hair loss.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to dabigatran etexilate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe kidney problems.
  • Do not take if you are currently bleeding.
  • Do not take if you have an organ injury that increases the risk of serious bleeding (e.g., stomach ulcer, brain injury or bleeding, recent brain or eye surgery).
  • Do not take if you have a known increased tendency to bleed.

  • Do not take if you are using other blood-thinning medicines (like warfarin, rivaroxaban, apixaban, or heparin), unless your doctor tells you to switch treatments.
  • Do not take if you have severe liver problems or a liver disease that could be life-threatening.
  • Do not take if you are using oral ketoconazole or itraconazole (medicines for fungal infections).
  • Do not take if you are using oral ciclosporin (a medicine used after organ transplants to prevent rejection).
  • Do not take if you are using dronedarone (a medicine for irregular heart rhythm).
  • Do not take if you are using a combination medicine containing glecaprevir and pibrentasvir (antiviral medicines for Hepatitis C).
  • Do not take if you have an artificial heart valve that requires permanent blood-thinning treatment.
