How to Use

Dosage

Typically 150 mg taken twice a day, or 220 mg once a day after certain surgeries. Your doctor will tell you the exact dose.

Method

Swallow capsules whole with a glass of water, with or without food. Do not break, chew, or open the capsule, as this can increase the risk of bleeding.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 300 mg. Your doctor will specify your dose based on your condition.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Bleeding, such as nosebleeds, bleeding from the stomach or gut, or bruising under the skin.
  • Stomach pain, indigestion, feeling sick (nausea), vomiting, loose stools (diarrhea), or heartburn.
  • Changes in blood tests, like fewer red blood cells or altered liver enzyme levels.
  • Allergic rash with red, raised, itchy bumps on the skin.
  • Hair loss.
RARE
  • Severe bleeding, such as bleeding in the brain, joints, from a surgical wound, or coughing up blood.
  • Severe allergic reactions, including difficulty breathing, dizziness, or swelling of the face or throat.
  • Ulcers in the stomach or gut (including the food pipe), or inflammation of the food pipe and stomach.
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice) due to liver or blood problems.
  • Very low or absent white blood cells (which fight infections), or other changes in blood cell counts.
  • Difficulty swallowing.
  • Fluid leaking from a wound.
  • Itching.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to dabigatran etexilate or any other ingredient in it.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have severe kidney problems or are currently bleeding a lot.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have an organ problem that increases your risk of severe bleeding, like a stomach ulcer or a recent brain injury.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are already taking other medicines to thin your blood, unless your doctor tells you to.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have severe liver problems or an artificial heart valve that needs constant blood-thinning medicine.
