How to Use

Dosage

The typical dose for adults is one 150 mg capsule taken twice a day (morning and evening). Your doctor will tell you the exact dose.

Method

Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water, with or without food. Do not break, chew, or open the capsule, as this increases the risk of bleeding.

Important

Do not take more than 600 mg in one day, as directed by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Bleeding (e.g., nosebleed, stomach, intestine, under skin, or urine that looks pink or red)
  • Stomach or abdominal pain
  • Indigestion or heartburn
  • Diarrhea or loose stools
  • Nausea
  • Fewer red blood cells (anemia)
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction with breathing difficulties, dizziness, or swelling of the face or throat
  • Bleeding in the brain
  • Bruising or blood clots under the skin
  • Coughing up blood or bloody spit
  • Allergic skin rash (dark red, raised, itchy bumps) or itching
  • Abnormal liver function test results or yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • Hair loss

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to dabigatran etexilate or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe kidney problems.
  • Do not take if you are currently bleeding.
  • Do not take if you have an organ injury that increases the risk of serious bleeding (e.g., stomach ulcer, brain injury, or recent brain or eye surgery).
  • Do not take if you are using other blood-thinning medicines (like warfarin, rivaroxaban, apixaban, or heparin), unless your doctor has specifically instructed you to do so for a change in treatment or certain procedures.

  • Do not take if you have an artificial heart valve that requires permanent blood-thinning treatment.
  • If you fall or get injured during treatment, especially if you hit your head, contact your doctor immediately. You might have an increased risk of bleeding.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you have a severe allergic reaction that causes breathing difficulties or dizziness.
