How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you how much to take. A common adult dose is one 150 mg capsule taken twice a day.

Method

Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water, with or without food. Do not break, chew, or open the capsule.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 300 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Low hemoglobin levels or reduced red blood cells.
  • Abnormal liver function test results or increased liver enzyme levels.
  • Bleeding from the nose.
  • Bleeding from the stomach or intestines.
  • Bleeding from genitals (penis/vagina) or urinary tract (including blood in urine).
  • Bleeding under the skin.
  • Stomach or abdominal pain.
  • Indigestion.
  • Loose stools or diarrhea.
  • Nausea.
  • Vomiting.
  • Reduced number of platelets in the blood.
  • Allergic skin rash, appearing as dark red, raised, itchy bumps.
  • Sudden skin changes affecting skin color and appearance.
  • Bruising.
  • Acid reflux into the esophagus.
  • Hair loss.
RARE
  • General bleeding.
  • Bleeding from hemorrhoids.
  • Bleeding from the rectum.
  • Bleeding into joints.
  • Bleeding due to injury or after a procedure.
  • Blood detected in stool during lab tests.
  • Reduced proportion of blood cells.
  • Allergic reaction (general).
  • Wound discharge (fluid oozing from surgical wound).
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice) due to liver problems or changes in blood values.
  • Bleeding in the brain.
  • Bleeding from a surgical incision.
  • Bleeding from an injection site.
  • Bleeding where a catheter connects to a vein.
  • Bloody discharge at the catheter connection site.
  • Coughing up blood or bloody sputum.
  • Severe allergic reaction causing breathing difficulties or dizziness.
  • Severe allergic reaction causing swelling of the face or throat.
  • Itching.
  • Stomach or intestinal ulcer (including esophageal ulcer).
  • Esophageal and stomach inflammation.
  • Difficulty swallowing.
  • Breathing difficulties and wheezing.
  • Reduced or absent white blood cells (which fight infections).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to dabigatran etexilate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have severe kidney problems.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are currently bleeding.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have organ damage that increases the risk of severe bleeding, such as a stomach ulcer or recent brain/eye surgery.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have a known tendency to bleed easily, whether from birth, an unknown cause, or due to other medicines.

  • Do not take this medicine if you are already taking other medicines to prevent blood clots, unless specifically instructed by your doctor.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have severe liver problems or a liver disease that could be life-threatening.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are taking oral ketoconazole or itraconazole for fungal infections.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are taking oral cyclosporine (used after organ transplants).
  • Do not take this medicine if you are taking dronedarone (for irregular heart rhythm).
  • Do not take this medicine if you are taking a combination medicine with glecaprevir and pibrentasvir (for Hepatitis C).
  • Do not take this medicine if you have an artificial heart valve that requires permanent blood-thinning treatment.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Consider renal impairment, age and body weight when determining the dosage. Consider potential interactions especially with other drugs that increase the risk of bleeding. (updated 19.9.2025)
