How to Use

Dosage

Typically, one 150 mg capsule twice a day. Your doctor will tell you the exact dose, which may vary based on your age, weight, or other medicines you take.

Method

Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water, with or without food. Do not break, chew, or open the capsule, as this increases the risk of bleeding.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is typically 300 mg (two 150 mg capsules). Your doctor will confirm your specific dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Bleeding from the nose, stomach, intestines, genitals, urinary tract (including blood in urine making it pink or red), or under the skin (bruises).
  • Feeling tired or weak due to fewer red blood cells (anemia).
  • Stomach or belly pain.
  • Indigestion.
  • Loose stools or diarrhea.
  • Feeling sick (nausea).
RARE
  • Bleeding from hemorrhoids, rectum, in the brain, into a joint, from a surgical cut, injury, injection site, or where a catheter connects to a vein.
  • Coughing up blood or bloody phlegm.
  • Low number of platelets in your blood (blood cells that help with clotting).
  • Low hemoglobin in blood (the part of red blood cells that carries oxygen).
  • Allergic reaction (like rash, itching) or sudden changes in skin color and appearance.
  • Ulcers in the stomach, intestines, or esophagus.
  • Inflammation of the esophagus or stomach.
  • Acid reflux (heartburn).
  • Vomiting.
  • Difficulty swallowing.
  • Abnormal liver function test results or increased liver enzyme levels.
  • Severe allergic reaction with breathing difficulties, dizziness, or swelling of the face or throat.
  • Rash from allergic reaction, appearing as dark red, raised, itchy bumps.
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice) due to liver problems or changes in blood values.
  • Breathing difficulties and wheezing.
  • Low or absent white blood cells (cells that fight infections).
  • Hair loss.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to dabigatran etexilate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe kidney problems.
  • Do not take if you are currently bleeding.
  • Do not take if you have organ damage that increases the risk of serious bleeding (e.g., stomach ulcer, brain injury or bleeding, recent brain or eye surgery).
  • Do not take if you have an increased tendency to bleed, which can be inborn, caused by an unknown reason, or by other medicines.

  • Do not take if you are already taking other medicines to prevent blood clots (like warfarin, rivaroxaban, apixaban, or heparin), unless your doctor specifically tells you to for switching treatments or certain procedures.
  • Do not take if you have severe liver problems or a liver disease that could be life-threatening.
  • Do not take if you are taking specific oral medicines for fungal infections (ketoconazole, itraconazole), medicines to prevent organ rejection (cyclosporine), or certain heart rhythm or Hepatitis C medicines (dronedarone, glecaprevir/pibrentasvir).
  • Do not take if you have an artificial heart valve that requires permanent blood-thinning treatment.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C
