How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine your specific dose, which can vary based on your condition. For adults preventing blood clots after joint surgery, the usual dose is 220 mg once a day (two 110 mg capsules). For children, doses vary by weight and age.

Method

Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water, with or without food. Do not break, chew, or empty the capsule, as this may increase the risk of bleeding.

Important

The maximum daily dose is determined by your doctor. For adults, the typical maximum dose for prevention after surgery is 220 mg once daily. For children, it varies by weight and age, up to 600 mg daily.

  • Bleeding from stomach or intestines, penis/vagina or urinary tract (including blood in urine), hemorrhoids, rectum, under skin, joint, from injury or after procedure
  • Blood in stool detected by lab tests
  • Reduced red blood cell count or decreased proportion of blood cells
  • Allergic reaction (including severe allergic reaction causing breathing difficulties, dizziness, or swelling of face/throat)
  • Wound discharge (fluid oozing from surgical wound or after procedure)
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes due to liver problems or blood test changes
  • Coughing up blood or bloody mucus
  • Decreased platelets in blood
  • Itching
  • Stomach or intestinal ulcer (including esophageal ulcer)
  • Esophageal and stomach inflammation
  • Stomach or abdominal pain
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Decreased or absent white blood cells
  • Difficulty breathing and wheezing

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to dabigatran etexilate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe kidney problems.
  • Do not take if you have active bleeding.
  • Do not take if you have an organ injury that increases the risk of serious bleeding (e.g., stomach ulcer, brain injury or bleeding, recent brain or eye surgery).
  • Tell your doctor if you have an increased risk of bleeding (e.g., recent bleeding, recent biopsy, serious injury, stomach or throat inflammation, heartburn, or if you take other medicines that increase bleeding risk like NSAIDs).

  • Tell your doctor if you have reduced kidney function or signs of dehydration (e.g., thirst, reduced urine, dark or foamy urine).
  • Be extra careful if you are over 75 years old or weigh 50 kg or less (for adults).
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor says it's safe. Avoid getting pregnant while taking this medicine.
  • If you fall or injure yourself, especially your head, contact a doctor immediately.
  • If you need surgery, this medicine may need to be stopped temporarily. It is important to follow your doctor's instructions exactly.
