How to Use

Dosage

The typical adult dose is one 150 mg capsule twice a day. If you are over 80 or taking verapamil, your dose may be one 110 mg capsule twice a day.

Method

Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water, with or without food. Do not break, chew, or empty the capsule, as this may increase the risk of bleeding.

Important

The maximum recommended daily dose for adults is 300 mg (two 150 mg capsules).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Bleeding from any body part, such as nose, stomach, intestines, genitals, or urine (which may appear pink or red), or bruising under the skin.
  • A decrease in red blood cells (which can cause tiredness or weakness).
  • Stomach or abdominal pain.
  • Indigestion.
  • Diarrhea or loose stools.
  • Nausea (feeling sick).
RARE
  • Bleeding from hemorrhoids, rectum, brain, in joints, from a wound, injection site, or catheter insertion site.
  • Coughing up blood or blood-stained mucus.
  • Reduced number of platelets in the blood.
  • Reduced hemoglobin or other blood cells (general).
  • Allergic reactions, including severe ones with breathing difficulties, dizziness, or swelling of the face/throat. Also, allergic rash with dark red, raised, itchy bumps.
  • Sudden changes in skin color or appearance, itching.
  • Ulcers in the stomach or intestines (including the esophagus), inflammation of the esophagus or stomach.
  • Heartburn or acid reflux.
  • Vomiting.
  • Difficulty swallowing.
  • Abnormal liver function test results, or increased liver enzyme levels.
  • Yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes (jaundice) due to liver problems or blood changes.
  • Reduced or absent white blood cells.
  • Hair loss.
  • Breathing difficulties and wheezing.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to dabigatran etexilate or any other ingredient in the medicine.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have severe kidney problems.
  • Do not take this medicine if you currently have bleeding.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have organ damage, such as a severe stomach ulcer or brain injury, that increases the risk of major bleeding.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are known to bleed easily.

  • Do not take this medicine if you have severe liver problems or a liver disease that could be life-threatening.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are taking certain oral antifungal medicines (like ketoconazole or itraconazole).
  • Do not take this medicine if you are taking oral ciclosporin (a medicine used after organ transplant).
  • Do not take this medicine if you are taking dronedarone (a medicine for irregular heart rhythm).
  • Do not take this medicine if you are taking a medicine containing glecaprevir and pibrentasvir (for Hepatitis C treatment).
  • Do not take this medicine if you have an artificial heart valve that requires permanent blood-thinning treatment.
