How to Use

Dosage

The typical dose is 220 mg once daily. For some patients, such as the elderly or those with reduced kidney function, the dose may be 150 mg once daily. A doctor will determine the correct dose for children.

Method

Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water, with or without food. Do not break, chew, or open the capsule, as this increases the risk of bleeding.

Important

For adults, the maximum daily dose for preventing blood clots is 220 mg once daily. For children, the maximum dose depends on weight and age, as determined by the doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Bruising, nosebleeds, or minor bleeding.
  • Stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
  • Changes in liver function tests.
RARE
  • Severe bleeding, such as bleeding in the brain or stomach.
  • Severe allergic reaction with difficulty breathing, dizziness, or swelling of the face and throat.
  • Stomach or intestinal ulcers.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to dabigatran etexilate or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not take this medicine if you currently have bleeding or a condition that increases your risk of serious bleeding (like stomach ulcers or a recent head injury).
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking other blood thinning medicines, as this may increase your risk of bleeding.
