How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual dose is one 150 mg capsule twice a day. Your doctor will tell you the exact dose.

Method

Take the capsule whole with a glass of water, with or without food. Do not break, chew, or open the capsule, as this increases the risk of bleeding.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is typically 300 mg, but your doctor will determine the correct dose for you.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Reduced levels of a blood protein (hemoglobin) or fewer red blood cells.
  • Changes in liver blood test results.
  • Minor bleeding, like nosebleeds, stomach/gut bleeding, blood in urine, or bleeding under the skin causing bruises.
  • Stomach or abdominal pain, indigestion, acid reflux, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
  • Bruises or blood collecting under the skin (hematoma).
  • Skin rash with red, itchy bumps, or sudden changes in skin color and look.
  • Hair loss.
  • Reduced number of blood clotting cells (platelets).
RARE
  • Serious bleeding in the brain, joints, or from surgery sites, injection spots, or injuries.
  • Coughing up blood or bloody phlegm.
  • Severe allergic reaction with breathing problems, dizziness, or swelling of the face or throat.
  • Inflammation or ulcers in the esophagus (food pipe) or stomach.
  • Difficulty swallowing.
  • Fluid leakage from wounds (e.g., surgical wounds).
  • Yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes (jaundice), often due to liver or blood problems.
  • Breathing difficulties or wheezing (not part of severe allergic reaction).
  • Reduced or absent white blood cells (cells that help fight infections).
  • Bloody fluid coming from the site where a catheter is inserted into a vein.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to dabigatran etexilate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe kidney problems.
  • Do not take if you have ongoing bleeding.
  • Do not take if you have an organ injury that increases the risk of severe bleeding (e.g., stomach ulcer, brain injury, or recent brain or eye surgery).
  • Do not take if you are using other blood thinners (like warfarin, rivaroxaban, apixaban, or heparin), unless your doctor tells you to.

  • Do not take if you have a mechanical heart valve requiring permanent blood thinning.

Use in Elderly Patients
