How to Use

Dosage

Usually, one 150 mg capsule twice a day.

Method

Swallow the capsule whole with water, with or without food. Do not break, chew, or open the capsule.

Important

Up to 300 mg per day (two 150 mg capsules).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Bleeding (such as nosebleeds, from the stomach or intestines, or under the skin).
  • Nausea.
  • Indigestion or stomach pain.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Bruising.
  • Feeling tired or pale due to fewer red blood cells.
  • Mild allergic reactions, such as rash or itching.
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction with difficulty breathing, dizziness, or swelling of the face or throat.
  • Bleeding in the brain.
  • Coughing up blood.
  • Stomach or intestinal ulcers.
  • Hair loss.
  • Fewer white blood cells, which can lead to infections.
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to dabigatran etexilate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have active bleeding or a condition that increases your risk of severe bleeding.
  • Do not take if you have severe kidney or liver problems.
  • Do not take if you are already taking other blood thinners (like warfarin, rivaroxaban, apixaban, or heparin), unless your doctor advises you to switch treatments.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Consider renal impairment, age and body weight when determining the dosage. Consider potential interactions especially with other drugs that increase the risk of bleeding. (updated 19.9.2025)
