How to Use

Dosage

Usually, adults take one 150 mg capsule twice a day. Your doctor will tell you the exact dose, especially if you are over 80 or take certain other medicines.

Method

Take the capsule whole with a glass of water, with or without food. Do not break, chew, or open the capsule, as this can increase bleeding risk.

Important

The usual maximum daily dose is 300 mg, but your doctor may prescribe a lower maximum dose based on your age or other medications.

COMMON
  • Bleeding (from nose, stomach, intestines, urinary tract, or under the skin)
  • Stomach or abdominal pain
  • Indigestion
  • Loose stools, diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Feeling tired or weak due to fewer red blood cells
  • Bruising
  • Skin rash or sudden skin changes
  • Vomiting
RARE
  • Bleeding (into a joint, from a wound, or in the brain)
  • Coughing up blood or bloody mucus
  • Serious allergic reaction (trouble breathing, dizziness, swollen face/throat)
  • Itching
  • Ulcers or inflammation in the stomach or food pipe
  • Acid reflux (heartburn)
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Yellow skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • Fewer white blood cells (which help fight infections)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to dabigatran etexilate or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have severe kidney problems or active bleeding.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had recent bleeding, a major injury, stomach ulcers, or other conditions that increase your risk of bleeding.
  • Always tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, especially other blood thinners, antifungals, or heart medicines, as they can interact with this drug.
  • If you need surgery or a spinal procedure, tell your doctor. You may need to stop taking this medicine temporarily.

Use in Elderly Patients
