How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the typical dose is usually 150 mg twice a day, or 220 mg once a day for certain conditions. Your doctor will prescribe the exact dose for you.

Method

Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water, with or without food. Do not break, chew, or open the capsule.

Important

The maximum recommended daily dose for adults is 300 mg, but your doctor may adjust your dose as needed.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Bleeding (such as nosebleeds, bleeding from the digestive tract, urine, or bruising under the skin)
  • Stomach pain, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or heartburn
  • Low number of red blood cells in the blood (can cause tiredness)
  • Allergic rash (itchy, raised, dark red welts) or changes in skin color
  • Abnormal liver function test results
RARE
  • Severe bleeding, such as bleeding in the brain, joints, or from a surgical site
  • Severe allergic reaction that can cause breathing difficulties, swelling of the face or throat, or dizziness
  • Coughing up blood or bloody sputum
  • Stomach or intestinal ulcer (including esophagus) or inflammation of the esophagus or stomach
  • Yellow skin or eyes (jaundice) due to liver problems
  • Low platelet or white blood cell count, difficulty swallowing, breathing difficulties (wheezing), or hair loss

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to dabigatran etexilate or any other ingredient.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had bleeding problems, or a medical condition that increases your risk of bleeding, such as a stomach ulcer or recent brain injury.
  • Inform your doctor if you have severe kidney or liver problems.
  • Always talk to your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, especially other blood thinners, and if you are having surgery.
  • Contact a doctor immediately if you fall or hit your head while on this treatment.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C
