How to Use

Dosage

Adults usually take 220 mg once daily. For some, like those with kidney problems or taking certain other medicines, the doctor might prescribe 150 mg or 75 mg once daily. Children take it twice daily, with the exact dose depending on their weight and age.

Method

Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water, with or without food. Do not break, chew, or open the capsule, as this can increase your risk of bleeding.

Important

The typical maximum daily dose for adults is 220 mg, but it can be lower (150 mg or 75 mg) based on your health. For children, the maximum daily dose is set by the doctor according to weight and age.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Lower number of red blood cells (anemia)
  • Abnormal liver function tests
  • Bruising, nosebleeds
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, indigestion, heartburn
  • Hair loss
  • Lower number of platelets in blood
  • Allergic skin rash (itchy, red raised bumps) or sudden skin changes
RARE
  • Severe bleeding (internal bleeding, bleeding from wounds, brain bleed, coughing up blood)
  • Severe allergic reaction (with difficulty breathing, dizziness, swelling of face or throat)
  • Stomach or intestinal ulcer (including esophagus), inflammation of esophagus or stomach, stomach pain, difficulty swallowing
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice) due to liver or blood problems
  • Difficulty breathing or wheezing
  • Lower number of white blood cells (which fight infection)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to dabigatran etexilate or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not take if you have active bleeding, a severe kidney problem, or a condition that greatly increases your risk of bleeding, like a stomach ulcer, or if you've recently had brain or eye surgery.
  • Do not take other blood-thinning medicines (like warfarin or heparin) at the same time, unless your doctor tells you to.
  • Always tell your doctor if you need surgery or a spinal procedure, as you may need to stop this medicine temporarily.
  • If you fall or hit your head, seek medical help right away, as there is a higher risk of internal bleeding.
