How to Use

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Fever
  • Low numbers of white blood cells, red blood cells, or platelets, which can cause infections or bleeding
  • Abnormal blood cells (megaloblastosis)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Stomach ache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Inflammation or sores in the mouth or anus
  • Skin changes like redness, blisters, rash, hives, blood vessel inflammation, and hair loss (these usually go away)
  • Liver changes like high liver enzyme levels (these usually go away when treatment stops)
  • Eye changes such as sore eyes, bleeding in the eye, vision problems, sensitivity to light, watery or burning eyes, and inflammation of the cornea (these usually go away when treatment stops)
  • Lower level of alertness (with high doses)
  • Speech problems (with high doses)
  • Unusual eye movements (with high doses)
  • Inflammation at the injection site
  • High levels of uric acid in the blood
RARE
  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) with breathing problems or dizziness
  • Blood poisoning (sepsis)
  • Inflammation and sores in the esophagus and throat
  • Severe bowel inflammation (necrotizing colitis)
  • Intestinal cysts
  • Skin ulcers
  • Itching
  • Brown or black spots on the skin
  • Yellow skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Lung inflammation (pneumonia)
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Paralysis of lower limbs and lower body if given into the spinal fluid
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Inflammation of the heart lining (pericarditis)
  • Kidney failure
  • Inability to urinate
  • Chest pain
  • Burning pain in palms and soles of feet

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to cytarabine or any other ingredient in it.
  • Do not use if your blood tests show very low blood cell counts not caused by cancer.
  • Do not use if you have poor body coordination after radiation or other cancer medicines like methotrexate.
  • Tell your doctor if your bone marrow is weak, as you will need close medical supervision.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver problems.

  • This medicine can significantly reduce blood cell production in your bone marrow, increasing your risk of infections or bleeding; your doctor will do regular blood tests.
  • Serious, sometimes life-threatening, side effects can occur in your brain, intestines, or lungs.
  • You should not get live or weakened vaccines during treatment with this medicine.
  • Avoid pregnancy for yourself or your partner during treatment and for 6 months after; use effective birth control.
  • Do not breastfeed before or during treatment with this medicine.
