How to Use

Dosage

The dose is individual and decided by a doctor based on your weight, age, kidney function, blood counts, and the condition being treated.

Method

It is given as an intravenous infusion into a vein through a tube, usually lasting one hour.

Important

Treatment usually starts with one or two infusions daily; if two, this continues for up to 21 days, then one infusion daily as directed by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Low white blood cell count, leading to infection symptoms like sore throat, mouth sores, or fever
  • Low red blood cell count, with symptoms such as shortness of breath, tiredness, palpitations, or pale skin
  • Fungal infection or thrush
  • Upper respiratory tract infection (e.g., sinus or throat infection)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Headache
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Stomach pain
  • Rash (eczema)
  • Tiredness
  • Fever
  • Sepsis (blood poisoning), with symptoms like fever, chills, palpitations, confusion, and slurred speech
  • Low platelet count, with symptoms like easy bleeding or bruising, blood in urine or stools, bleeding gums; bleeding can be severe
  • Severe reduction in blood cells
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), with symptoms such as severe stomach pain radiating to the back
  • Seizures
  • Flu
  • Urinary tract infection, with symptoms like fever, more frequent urination, and pain during urination
  • Skin or subcutaneous infection
  • Mild allergic reaction, with symptoms such as red, itchy skin
  • Weight loss
  • Depression, anxiety, or confusion

  • Weakness or numbness in hands or feet, which may affect balance
  • Changes in sensation, such as tingling, itching, prickling, or a burning feeling

  • Eye inflammation (conjunctivitis), eye pain, or vision problems
  • Ear pain
  • Low blood pressure, causing dizziness or weakness
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Constipation, flatulence, indigestion, stomach pain, abdominal bloating
  • Mouth sores
  • Abnormal liver or kidney test results seen in laboratory tests
  • Night sweats
  • Itching or rash
  • Hair loss
  • Back, muscle, or joint pain; muscle cramps
  • Dizziness, weakness, or a general feeling of being unwell
  • Injection site reaction, such as inflammation, pain, and swelling at the site where the medicine is given
RARE
  • Bone marrow failure (stopped production of blood cells in the bone marrow)
  • Hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not real)
  • Unusual thoughts or feelings, loss of touch with reality
  • Kidney problems
  • Severe allergic reaction, with symptoms such as red, itchy skin, swelling of the throat, face, lips, or mouth, and difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • Agitation
  • Tremors or shaking
  • Deafness
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Hives or dry skin
  • Blood in urine
  • Male infertility
  • Chest pain

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to ganciclovir, valganciclovir, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you are breastfeeding.
  • Tell your doctor if you are allergic to other antiviral medicines like aciclovir, valaciclovir, penciclovir, or famciclovir.
  • Tell your doctor if you have low white blood cells, red blood cells, or platelets, or a history of blood count problems caused by other medicines; your doctor will check your blood regularly.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, as you may need a lower dose and more frequent blood tests.

  • Tell your doctor if you are undergoing radiation therapy.
  • Avoid pregnancy during and after treatment. Women must use contraception for at least 30 days after stopping treatment. Men must use a condom for at least 90 days after stopping treatment if their partner can become pregnant.
  • This medicine can cause drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, tremors, loss of balance, or seizures; if you experience these, do not drive or use tools/machinery.
