How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 50 mg once daily for adults with high blood pressure. For children aged 6-18, the dose is 0.7 mg per kg of body weight once daily.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water, preferably at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum dose can be 100 mg daily for adults with high blood pressure and 25 mg daily for children (20–50 kg). For heart failure, the maximum dose is 150 mg daily.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness
  • Low blood pressure (especially with fluid loss)
  • Weakness
  • Tiredness
  • Low blood sugar
  • High blood potassium
  • Kidney problems or kidney failure
  • Anemia (reduced red blood cells)
  • Increased blood urea and creatinine (in heart failure)
RARE
  • Drowsiness, headache, sleep problems
  • Palpitations (fast heartbeat), chest pain, very fast and irregular heartbeat, stroke
  • Shortness of breath
  • Abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, swelling of the intestines
  • Hives, itching, rash, swelling (face, lips, throat, tongue, or elsewhere on the body), allergic reaction
  • Cough
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Fainting
  • Inflammation of blood vessels
  • Liver inflammation, increased liver enzyme levels

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to losartan or any other ingredient.
  • Do not use if you are more than 3 months pregnant or planning pregnancy (avoid in early pregnancy too).
  • Do not use if you have severe liver problems.
  • Do not use if you have diabetes or kidney problems and are taking a blood pressure medicine containing aliskiren.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had swelling of the face, lips, throat, or tongue (angioedema).

  • Tell your doctor if you have had severe vomiting or diarrhea recently.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking water pills (diuretics) or are on a low-salt diet.
  • Tell your doctor if you have narrowed kidney arteries or have had a kidney transplant recently.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart failure, heart valve problems, or coronary artery disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking other medicines that can increase potassium levels in your blood.
  • Avoid grapefruit juice while taking Cozaar.
  • If you get stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea after taking Cozaar, contact your doctor. Do not stop taking the medicine by yourself.
  • If you feel dizzy or sleepy, do not drive or use machines before talking to your doctor.
  • Tell your doctor if you have lactose intolerance.
