How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for adults is one 50 mg Cozaar tablet once a day. Your doctor may change this dose.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water, with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day. Avoid grapefruit juice.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 150 mg. Do not take more than your doctor prescribes.

Possible Side Effects

  • Low blood pressure, especially when standing up (feeling dizzy or lightheaded)
  • Weakness
  • Tiredness
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
  • High potassium in the blood (hyperkalemia)
  • Kidney problems, including kidney failure
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia)
  • Headache
  • Sleep problems
  • Feeling a fast heartbeat (palpitations)
  • Chest pain (angina pectoris)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Abdominal pain
  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Hives (itchy rash)
  • Itching
  • Rash
  • Local swelling (edema)
  • Cough
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction with swelling of the face, lips, mouth, throat, or gut, which may cause stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • Inflammation of blood vessels (vasculitis)
  • Numbness or tingling (paresthesia)
  • Fainting (syncope)
  • Very fast and irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation)
  • Stroke
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis) or increased liver enzyme levels

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Cozaar if you are allergic to losartan or any of its other ingredients.
  • Do not use Cozaar if you are more than 3 months pregnant. It is also best to avoid Cozaar in early pregnancy because it can harm your baby.
  • Do not use Cozaar if you have severe liver problems.
  • Do not use Cozaar if you have diabetes or kidney problems and are taking aliskiren (another medicine for high blood pressure).
  • Stop taking Cozaar and get help from a doctor right away if you get a serious allergic reaction. Symptoms include rash, itching, swelling of your face, lips, mouth, or throat, which can make it hard to swallow or breathe.

  • Tell your doctor if you have recently had severe vomiting or diarrhea, or are taking diuretics (water pills), as this can lead to serious fluid loss.
  • Tell your doctor if you have narrowing of the arteries to your kidneys, have had a kidney transplant, or have poor kidney function.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart failure, serious heart rhythm problems, or issues with your heart valves or heart muscle, or problems with blood flow to your heart or brain.
  • Tell your doctor if you have primary hyperaldosteronism (a condition where your adrenal glands make too much of a hormone called aldosterone).

Category A
