How to Use

Dosage

Always follow the dosage your doctor has prescribed for you.

Method

Take the tablets whole or halved with plenty of liquid, with or without food. Try to take them at the same time each day.

Important

Do not exceed the dose prescribed by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • High potassium levels in your blood
  • Low sodium levels in your blood
  • Feeling sick, throwing up, or diarrhea
  • Skin rash
RARE
  • Inflammation of blood vessel walls
  • Mouth sores or inflammation
  • Bowel inflammation (colitis)
  • Pancreas inflammation
  • Severe skin reactions, including widespread rashes, blisters, and peeling skin. This can also include drug rashes with fever, swollen glands, and purple or raised painful sores on the skin.
  • Increased sensitivity to sunlight
  • Purple spots on the skin, often on legs (Henoch-Schönlein purpura)
  • Changes in blood cells, such as anemia (low red blood cells) or low white blood cells or platelets
  • Severe allergic reactions, including sudden life-threatening allergic shock or serum sickness
  • Low blood sugar
  • Too much acid in your blood (metabolic acidosis)
  • Problems with balance (ataxia)
  • Brain inflammation (meningitis) that is not caused by bacteria
  • Nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy, neuritis)
  • Seizures (convulsions)
  • Ringing in your ears (tinnitus)
  • Dizziness
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • Liver cell death
  • Liver problems
  • Muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis)
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (an autoimmune disease)
  • Crystals in your urine
  • Reduced kidney function, kidney failure, or kidney inflammation
  • Mental problems (psychotic symptoms)
  • Headache
  • Heart rhythm changes (prolonged QT interval, rapid irregular heartbeat)
  • Lung disease
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat (angioedema), or hives
  • Itching
  • Muscle pain or cramps
  • Fever

Important Warnings

  • Stop taking this medicine right away if you get a skin rash or if your blood tests show problems.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to trimethoprim, sulfamethoxazole, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe liver damage.
  • Do not use if you have severe kidney problems.
  • Do not use if you have a disorder in how your blood cells are made.

  • Do not use if you have porphyria (a rare blood disorder).
  • Do not use if you have a specific type of anemia (megaloblastic anemia) caused by lack of folic acid.
  • Do not give to babies younger than 6 weeks old.
  • Stop using this medicine right away and see a doctor if you get a severe rash or other serious skin reactions.
  • Contact your doctor if your symptoms come back or get worse, or if you get a fever or signs of a new infection during or after treatment.
  • Tell your doctor right away if your cough suddenly gets worse and you have trouble breathing.
  • Taking this medicine with certain other medicines (like some diuretics or potassium-sparing drugs) can cause dangerously high potassium levels in your blood.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you have several symptoms at once or close together, such as fever, swollen lymph nodes, weakness, dizziness, shortness of breath, bruising, or a rash.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Contraindicated in case of severe hepatic impairment. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Consider the risks when used in combination with medicines that predispose to hyperkalaemia and are myelotoxic. (updated 6.11.2023)
