Clozapine Accord tablets contain clozapine and are used to treat certain mental health conditions like schizophrenia and severe thought and behavior problems in Parkinson's disease, when other medicines haven't worked.

How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will start you on a low dose, often 12.5 mg (half of a 25 mg tablet) once or twice daily, and slowly increase it. For schizophrenia, the usual effective dose is 200-450 mg per day. For Parkinson's related issues, the usual effective dose is 25-37.5 mg daily, taken in the evening.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water. Your doctor will tell you exactly how to take it. Do not change your dose or stop taking this medicine without talking to your doctor.

Important

For schizophrenia, the maximum daily dose is 900 mg. For Parkinson's related issues, the maximum daily dose is 100 mg.

RARE
  • Sudden high fever and stiff muscles (serious neuroleptic malignant syndrome)
  • Strange or unreal feeling, dizziness or fainting when getting up (increased fall risk)
  • Lack of white blood cells (agranulocytosis)
  • Stammering
  • Respiratory infection or pneumonia (fever, cough, breathing issues, wheezing)
  • Severe burning upper abdominal pain (pancreatitis)
  • Fainting and muscle weakness due to low blood pressure
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite with liver issues
  • Obesity
  • Sleep apnea (breathing stops during sleep)
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia)
  • Agitation, confusion, delirium
  • Irregular heartbeat, inflammation of heart muscle or membrane (myocarditis/pericarditis), fluid around heart
  • High blood sugar, diabetes
  • Blood clots in lungs
  • Liver inflammation or disease (yellow skin, dark urine, itching)
  • Elevated creatinine kinase (an enzyme in blood)
  • Prolonged painful erection (priapism)
  • Spontaneous bleeding or bruising (low platelets)
  • Symptoms of poor blood sugar control (nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, intense thirst, excessive urination, confusion)
  • Symptoms of bowel obstruction (abdominal pain, cramps, bloating, vomiting, constipation, difficulty passing gas)
  • Severe liver disease (potentially leading to liver necrosis)
  • Kidney inflammation (nausea, vomiting, fatigue, weight loss)
  • Increased platelets (blood clot risk)
  • Involuntary mouth, tongue, or limb movements
  • Obsessive thoughts or compulsive behaviors
  • Severe skin reactions (like DRESS syndrome)
  • Swelling in front of ear
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Very high triglycerides or cholesterol
  • Heart muscle disease (cardiomyopathy), cardiac arrest, sudden unexplained death
  • Changes in brain activity (EEG)
  • Diarrhea
  • Uncomfortable stomach, heartburn, stomach pain after meals
  • Muscle weakness, spasms, or pain
  • Nasal congestion
  • Bedwetting
  • Sudden uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Uncontrolled body turning to one side
  • Ejaculatory disorder in men (e.g., dry orgasm)
  • Rash, purplish spots, fever or itching due to vasculitis (blood vessel inflammation)
  • Diarrhea from colitis (colon inflammation), abdominal pain, fever, changes in skin color, "butterfly rash" on face
  • Joint or muscle pain, fever, weakness (lupus-like symptoms)
  • Restless legs syndrome

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to clozapine or any other ingredients.
  • You must have regular blood tests before, during, and after treatment to check your white blood cell count. This medicine can severely lower your white blood cells.
  • Do not take if you have ever had a low white blood cell count caused by medicines or if you stopped Clozapine Accord before due to serious side effects (like very low white blood cells or heart problems).
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you get flu-like symptoms (fever, sore throat, infection signs) or sudden high fever, stiff muscles, fast or irregular heartbeat, chest pain, breathing problems, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, or severe constipation.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine.
