How to Use

Dosage

The dosage varies depending on the infection, but your doctor or nurse will give you the exact dose and how often it should be given.

Method

This medicine is given as an injection into a muscle or vein, or as an infusion into a vein by hospital staff.

Important

The maximum dose for adults is 12 grams per day for severe infections, but your doctor will determine the exact dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling unwell
  • Diarrhea
  • Skin rash
  • Vein inflammation (inflammation of a vein after an intravenous injection)
RARE
  • Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) with symptoms like redness, itching or hives, breathing difficulties, and dizziness.
  • Decrease in certain white blood cells (agranulocytosis or leukopenia), which can increase the risk of infection.
  • Acute severe bowel inflammation (pseudomembranous colitis).
  • New infections (superinfections).
  • Severe skin reaction (DRESS syndrome) with fever, fatigue, facial swelling, and effects on internal organs.
  • Swelling under the skin (angioedema).
  • Mental status changes (encephalopathy) due to brain dysfunction.
  • Increase in eosinophils (a type of white blood cell).
  • Hives (urticaria).
  • Liver damage.
  • Kidney damage or inflammation.
  • Decrease in red blood cells (anemia).
  • Decrease in platelets (thrombocytopenia).
  • Nausea.
  • Vomiting.
  • Yeast overgrowth in the mouth and vagina.
  • Local pain at the injection site when given into a muscle.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to cloxacillin, other penicillins, or cephalosporins.
  • Contact your doctor if you experience severe or persistent diarrhea during or after treatment, as this could be a serious bowel inflammation.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, as the dosage may need adjustment.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you experience fever, stiff neck, headache, confusion, or difficulty moving limbs or speaking, especially with high doses or kidney issues.
  • If new infections appear during long-term treatment (e.g., fungal infections), stop using the medicine and contact your doctor.
