Method

A doctor or nurse will give this medicine as an injection into a muscle or vein, or as an infusion into a vein.

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling sick (nausea) or loose stools
  • Skin rash
  • Inflammation of a vein after injection (phlebitis)
  • Increase in a certain type of white blood cells (eosinophils)
  • Itchy raised rash (hives)
RARE
  • Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) with symptoms like redness, itching, hives, trouble breathing, and dizziness. Seek immediate medical help.
  • Decrease in a type of white blood cells (granulocytes), making you more prone to infections.
  • Severe inflammation of the large intestine (colitis).
  • Lower white blood cell count (leukopenia).
  • Liver problems or damage.
  • Kidney problems or damage.
  • Severe skin reactions (DRESS syndrome) with fever, tiredness, swollen face/lymph nodes, increased specific white blood cells, and effects on liver, kidneys, or lungs.
  • Swelling under the skin (angioedema).
  • Changes in mental state due to brain disease or damage (encephalopathy).
  • Lower red blood cell count (anemia).
  • Damage to blood cells, such as lower platelet count (thrombocytopenia).
  • Vomiting.
  • Inflammation of the kidneys.
  • Local pain where the injection was given into a muscle.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to cloxacillin, other penicillins, or cephalosporins.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience fever, stiff neck, headache, confusion, or difficulty moving or speaking.
