How to Use

Dosage

For adults, usually 0.5-1 gram four times a day into a muscle, or 1-2 grams three to four times a day into a vein, or 2 grams four to six times a day as a short drip into a vein. For children, the dose depends on their weight: 50 mg/kg per day in 4 doses into a muscle, or 100 mg/kg per day (or more) in 4-6 doses into a vein.

Method

This medicine is given by a doctor or nurse as an injection into a muscle or vein, or as a drip (infusion) into a vein.

Important

The usual maximum daily dose is 6 grams as a continuous infusion into a vein, which can be increased to 12 grams for severe infections.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Swelling of a vein (thrombophlebitis).
  • Feeling sick (nausea) and diarrhea.
  • Skin rash.
RARE
  • Increased white blood cells.
  • Hives (itchy rash).
  • Severe colon inflammation (pseudomembranous colitis).
  • Decreased white blood cells.
  • Low platelet count, which can cause increased bleeding (thrombocytopenia).
  • Effects on the liver.
  • Effects on the kidneys.
  • Fungal infections in the mouth and stomach.
  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) which can be life-threatening, with symptoms like red skin, itchy rash (hives), trouble breathing, and dizziness. Seek medical help immediately.
  • Problems with white blood cells (agranulocytosis), which can lead to severe infections with symptoms like fever, sore throat, mouth pain, or trouble urinating. Seek medical help immediately.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to cloxacillin, other penicillins, or cephalosporins.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or develop diarrhea.
