Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Stomach or gut problems like nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea.
  • Severe, long-lasting, or bloody diarrhea during or after treatment, which can be a sign of gut inflammation.
  • Changes in blood counts, such as fewer white blood cells (increasing infection risk), fewer platelets (increasing bleeding/bruising risk), increased eosinophils, or fewer granulocytes.
  • Vein inflammation (thrombophlebitis).
  • Abdominal pain, inflammation of the esophagus, or inflammation of the mouth lining.
  • Skin changes like widespread rash with blisters (maculopapular exanthem, measles-like rash), and hives.
  • Changes in liver function test results and increased liver enzyme levels.
RARE
  • Reduced number of certain white blood cells (granulocytopenia), which increases infection risk.
  • Nervous system disorders, such as blocked nerve signals (neuromuscular blockade) and taste disturbances (dysgeusia).
  • Heart and breathing arrest, and low blood pressure if the medicine is given too quickly (clindamycin should only be given as an infusion, not an injection into a vein).
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Rash with irregular red patches (erythema multiforme), itchy skin.
  • Pain and abscess at the injection site.
  • Sudden swelling of the skin and mucous membranes (e.g., throat or tongue), causing breathing difficulties and/or itching and rash (angioedema), joint swelling.
  • Drug fever.
  • Severe skin reactions: widespread rash with blisters and peeling skin, especially around the mouth, nose, eyes, and genitals (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), and a more severe blistering skin disease (toxic epidermal necrolysis or Lyell's syndrome).
  • Widespread, red rash with peeling skin (exfoliative dermatitis, bullous dermatitis).
  • Severe allergic reaction causing swelling of the face or throat (angioedema).
  • Inflammation of the vaginal lining (vaginitis).
  • Severe acute allergic reaction (anafylactic reaction).
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis) with yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice).
  • Allergic reaction with rash and blisters.
  • Joint pain or tenderness (polyarthritis).
  • Colon inflammation caused by Clostridium difficile infection.
  • Vaginal infection.
  • Severe acute allergic reaction, including significant drop in blood pressure, paleness, increased heart rate, clammy skin, reduced consciousness (anaphylactic shock, anaphylactoid reaction, hypersensitivity).
  • Disturbance of the sense of smell.
  • Drowsiness.
  • Dizziness.
  • Headache.
  • Jaundice.
  • Fever, swollen lymph nodes, or rash (DRESS syndrome), which can be severe and life-threatening.
  • Rare rash with sudden onset of red skin and small pus-filled blisters (acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis, AGEP).
  • Irritation at the injection site.
  • Swelling of legs, ankles, or feet due to fluid retention, shortness of breath, or nausea.
