How to Use

Dosage

For adults and adolescents over 14, 8-12 ml for moderate infections or 16-18 ml for severe infections, given in 2-4 doses daily. For children (4 weeks to 14 years), 20-40 mg per kg body weight, given in 3-4 doses daily.

Method

This medicine is given as an injection into a muscle or as an infusion into a vein after it has been diluted. It must not be given as an undiluted intravenous injection.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults and adolescents over 14 is 32 ml (4.8 g clindamycin), given in 2-4 doses. A single intramuscular injection must not exceed 600 mg of clindamycin.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.
RARE
  • Changes in blood cell counts (e.g., low platelets, white blood cells).
  • Drug-induced fever.
  • Allergic reaction to benzyl alcohol, severe allergic reaction (anafylaktisk chock) with swelling of face/throat, difficulty breathing, or collapse.
  • Blockage of nerve signals to muscles (neuromuscular blocking effect).
  • Changes in taste and smell, dizziness, headache.
  • Severe inflammation of the colon (pseudomembranous colitis) with watery diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps.
  • Inflammation of the esophagus, tongue, or mouth.
  • Mild, temporary increase in liver enzymes, temporary hepatitis with jaundice due to bile blockage.
  • Allergic reactions such as rash resembling measles, itching, hives, swelling (e.g., angioedema), severe widespread skin rashes with blisters (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome, Lyell's syndrome), itching, vaginal inflammation (discharge), scaly or blistering skin inflammation.
  • Joint swelling, inflammation of multiple joints (polyarthritis).
  • After intramuscular injection: injection site reactions such as pain, hardening, and sterile abscesses. After intravenous infusion: infusion site reactions such as pain and vein inflammation with blood clot (thrombophlebitis). Rapid intravenous administration may cause reactions like warmth, nausea, and rarely severe heart issues (e.g., low blood pressure, cardiac arrest).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to clindamycin, lincomycin, benzyl alcohol, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, muscle diseases (like myasthenia gravis or Parkinson's), or a history of bowel disease (like colitis).
  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience severe allergic reactions (e.g., swelling of the face/throat, difficulty breathing, shock) or severe diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, especially if it contains blood or mucus.
  • For long-term use (over 3 weeks), regular blood and liver/kidney function tests are needed. Contact your doctor immediately if you notice reduced urination, swelling, shortness of breath, or nausea, as these may indicate acute kidney damage.
  • This medicine is not for treating acute viral respiratory infections or meningitis.

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, discuss the benefits and risks with your doctor before using this medicine. It contains benzyl alcohol, which can be harmful to newborns (under 4 weeks) and small children (under 3 years).
  • This medicine may affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. If you experience dizziness or drowsiness, do not drive or use machines.
  • Do not take this medicine with erythromycin or other macrolide antibiotics, as it may reduce their effectiveness. Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, especially blood thinners like warfarin.
  • Never stop your treatment early without talking to your doctor, even if you feel better, to prevent the infection from returning or getting worse.
