How to Use

Dosage

For adults and adolescents over 12 years, the usual dose is 8–18 ml per day, given in 2–4 equal doses, depending on the severity of the infection.

Method

A doctor or nurse will administer this medicine as an injection into a muscle or as a diluted drip into a vein.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults and adolescents over 12 years is 18 ml (2.7 g of clindamycin), but up to 4.8 g may be given for life-threatening infections.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Stomach or gut problems like diarrhea, stomach pain, vomiting, nausea.
  • Serious gut inflammation (colitis) caused by antibiotics, which needs immediate treatment.
  • Changes in blood counts, such as low levels of certain white blood cells (agranulocytosis, neutropenia, leukopenia) or increased eosinophils, and a tendency to bleed (thrombocytopenia).
  • Vein inflammation (thrombophlebitis).
  • Skin problems like widespread rash with small bumps, or hives.
  • Abnormal liver function tests.
RARE
  • Nerve system effects, such as blockage of nerve signals to muscles, and taste disturbances.
  • Heart and blood vessel effects, such as cardiac arrest and low blood pressure.
  • General symptoms and effects at the injection site, such as pain and abscess at the injection site.
  • Drug fever, allergic reaction to benzyl alcohol (an ingredient in this medicine).
  • Severe skin reactions like widespread rash with blisters and peeling skin, especially around the mouth, nose, eyes, and genitals (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), and a more severe form with extensive skin detachment (toxic epidermal necrolysis).
  • Widespread red skin with small pus-filled blisters (acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis, AGEP).
  • Angioedema (swelling, especially of the face and neck, with wheezing and/or difficulty breathing).
  • Itching.
  • Vaginal inflammation.
  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylactic reaction).
  • Temporary liver inflammation (hepatitis) with yellow skin or eyes (cholestatic jaundice).
  • Hypersensitivity reaction with rash and blisters.
  • Joint inflammation (polyarthritis).
  • Severe colon infection caused by Clostridium difficile.
  • Vaginal infection.
  • Severe allergic reactions like a sharp drop in blood pressure, paleness, weak rapid pulse, clammy skin, reduced consciousness (anaphylactic shock), anaphylactoid reaction, hypersensitivity.
  • Drowsiness.
  • Dizziness.
  • Headache.
  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin/eyes).
  • Fever, swollen lymph nodes, or skin rash, which can be symptoms of a condition called DRESS (Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms). This reaction can be severe and life-threatening.
  • A rare skin rash with rapidly appearing red areas and small pus-filled blisters (acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis, AGEP).
  • Irritation at the injection site.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to clindamycin, lincomycin, or any other ingredient in Clindamycin Fresenius Kabi.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems.
  • Inform your doctor if you have muscle problems like myasthenia gravis or Parkinson's disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had gut problems like inflammation of the colon.
  • Always tell your doctor about any allergies you have, especially to penicillin.

  • If you get a severe skin rash, blisters, or skin peeling, contact your doctor right away. These could be signs of a serious reaction.
  • This medicine must be given slowly into a vein (as an infusion) over 10 to 60 minutes to avoid side effects.
  • For long-term treatment (over 10 days), your doctor will regularly check your blood, liver, and kidney function.
  • Severe kidney problems can occur. If you notice less urine, swelling in your legs or feet, shortness of breath, or nausea, contact your doctor immediately.
  • During treatment, a serious inflammation of the large intestine (colitis) can happen. If you have severe, ongoing diarrhea, especially with mucus or blood, during or up to two months after treatment, tell your doctor right away.
  • This medicine should not be used for acute respiratory infections caused by viruses.
  • Clindamycin Fresenius Kabi is not suitable for treating meningitis (inflammation of the brain lining).
  • This medicine contains benzyl alcohol, which can be harmful to young children, especially newborns. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have liver or kidney problems, as benzyl alcohol can build up in the body and cause serious side effects.
  • If you are taking blood thinners like warfarin, you might have a higher risk of bleeding. Your doctor may need to check your blood regularly.
  • Do not use this medicine with medicines containing erythromycin, as they may make each other less effective.
  • This medicine can increase the effect of muscle relaxants, which can be dangerous during surgery.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness, tiredness, or headaches. If you experience these symptoms, do not drive or operate machinery.
