How to Use

Dosage

For adults and adolescents over 12, the usual dose is 1200-2700 mg daily, divided into 2-4 equal doses, depending on the severity of the infection.

Method

This medicine is given as an injection into a muscle or as a slow drip (infusion) into a vein, usually by a doctor or nurse.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults and adolescents over 12 is 2700 mg, but for life-threatening infections, up to 4800 mg may be given.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea (including severe or bloody diarrhea, possibly due to a Clostridium difficile infection)
  • Inflammation of a vein (thrombophlebitis)
  • Skin rashes (like widespread rash with blisters, or hives)
  • Changes in liver function test results
  • Reduced white blood cell count, leading to more infections (with fever, severe chills, sore throat, or mouth sores)
  • Reduced platelet count (thrombocytopenia), which can cause bruising or bleeding
RARE
  • Nervous system disorders: blocked nerve signals (neuromuscular blockade), altered taste (dysgeusia)
  • Breathing difficulties, low blood pressure
  • Pain or abscess at the injection site
  • Fever
  • Itchy skin
  • Vaginal inflammation (vaginitis)
  • Severe skin reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP), and Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS) syndrome
  • Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis, anaphylactic shock), with symptoms such as sudden wheezing, difficulty breathing, swelling of eyelids, face or lips, rash, itching, significant drop in blood pressure, paleness, increased heart rate, clammy skin, and reduced consciousness
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis) with yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice)
  • Joint pain or tenderness (polyarthritis)
  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Injection site irritation

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to clindamycin, lincomycin (another antibiotic), or any other ingredients listed in this leaflet.
  • Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, muscle disorders (like myasthenia gravis or Parkinson's disease), or a history of colon inflammation or any other allergies (e.g., to penicillin).
  • Seek immediate medical help if you develop severe skin reactions (e.g., widespread rash, blisters, skin peeling), as these can be life-threatening.
  • Stop treatment and contact your doctor immediately if you have signs of a severe allergic reaction (e.g., sudden wheezing, difficulty breathing, swelling of eyelids, face, or lips, rash, or itching).
  • For treatments lasting more than 10 days, your doctor may need to monitor your blood counts, liver, and kidney function.

  • If you get severe or bloody diarrhea during or after treatment, tell your doctor right away as this could be a sign of serious colon inflammation and requires immediate medical attention.
  • This medicine should not be given to children under 12 years of age.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor. This medicine should not be used during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary, as it can pass into breast milk and may affect the baby.
  • This medicine may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or headache. Do not drive or operate machinery if you experience these symptoms.
