How to Use

Dosage

Usually, one tablet is taken daily. If you have kidney disease, your doctor might adjust the dose.

Method

Take the tablet first thing in the morning when you wake up, before eating or drinking (other than plain water) and before other medicines. Swallow the tablet whole with about 2 deciliters (a glass) of plain water. Do not chew, suck, or crush it. Wait at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything else. Stay upright (sitting or standing) for at least one hour after taking the medicine.

Important

The usual maximum dose is one tablet daily.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea, heartburn, difficulty swallowing (esophagus inflammation)
  • Stomach pain, indigestion
  • Low blood calcium levels
  • Weakness
RARE
  • Severe stomach pain (can be a sign of bleeding ulcer or stomach inflammation)
  • Persistent eye pain and inflammation
  • New pain, weakness, or discomfort in the thigh, hip, or groin (early signs of an unusual thigh bone fracture)
  • Pain or soreness in the mouth or jaw (early signs of severe jaw bone disease/osteonecrosis)
  • Ear pain, ear infection, or discharge from the ear (can be signs of bone damage in the ear)
  • Itching, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and throat with breathing difficulties (severe allergic reaction)
  • Severe skin reactions
  • Asthma attack
  • Chest pain
  • Itching or tingling sensation on the skin (paresthesia)
  • Flu-like symptoms, general malaise or pain
  • Dry mouth, altered taste, or difficulty swallowing
  • Anemia (low blood count)
  • High levels of urea or parathyroid hormone in the blood

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Clastec if you are allergic to ibandronic acid or any other ingredients in the medicine.
  • Do not take if you have esophagus problems (like narrowing or difficulty swallowing) or if the medicine causes severe irritation.
  • Do not take if you cannot stand or sit upright for at least one hour after taking the medicine.
  • Do not take if you have had low calcium levels in your blood.
  • This medicine can rarely cause jaw bone damage (osteonecrosis), even after stopping treatment. Tell your doctor about any dental problems.
