How to Use

Dosage

For adults and adolescents over 12 years: typically one 250 mg tablet twice daily, or half of a 500 mg tablet twice daily. For H. pylori stomach ulcers, two 250 mg tablets or one 500 mg tablet twice daily, usually with other medications. Your doctor will determine your exact dose.

Method

Take orally with a glass of water. You can take it with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults and adolescents is usually 1000 mg (e.g., two 500 mg tablets or four 250 mg tablets per day), as directed by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Insomnia (trouble sleeping)
  • Headache
  • Changes in taste (e.g., metallic or bitter taste)
  • Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, indigestion
  • Abnormal liver function test results
  • Rash
  • Increased sweating
RARE
  • Fungal infections, such as oral thrush (white patches in mouth) or vaginal infections
  • Low white blood cell count (leukopenia, neutropenia) or increased specific white blood cells (eosinophilia)
  • Dizziness, vertigo (spinning sensation), drowsiness, anxiety, or tremors
  • Palpitations (feeling your heart beat unusually fast or strong)
  • Gastritis (stomach inflammation), stomatitis (mouth inflammation), glossitis (tongue inflammation), flatulence, constipation, belching, dry mouth
  • Cholestasis (blocked bile flow), hepatitis (liver inflammation), elevated liver enzymes, itching, hives
  • Malaise (general feeling of being unwell), weakness, chest pain, chills, fatigue
  • Abnormal dreams, disorientation, hallucinations, seizures, changes in smell or taste, tingling or numbness, hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in ears)
  • Visual disturbances, blurred vision, vision impairment

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to clarithromycin, other macrolide antibiotics, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you or a close family member have had certain heart rhythm problems or if your heart's electrical activity shows a prolonged QT interval on an ECG.
  • Do not take if you have severe liver problems along with kidney problems.
  • Do not take if you have abnormally low levels of potassium or magnesium in your blood.
  • Do not take with certain medications like midazolam (a sedative), ticagrelor (for blood clots), ergotamine (for migraines), pimozide (for psychosis), some cholesterol-lowering drugs (e.g., lovastatin, simvastatin), colchicine (for gout), or other drugs known to cause serious heart rhythm issues.

  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience sudden difficulty breathing, speaking or swallowing, severe dizziness or fainting, or severe itchy rash with blisters, especially around the mouth, eyes or genitals.
  • Contact your doctor as soon as possible if you get severe and long-lasting diarrhea during or after treatment, especially if it contains blood or mucus, and is accompanied by cramping stomach pain. This could be a sign of serious bowel inflammation.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you develop symptoms of liver problems, such as loss of appetite, yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, itching, or stomach pain.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience severe pain in your stomach and back, which could be a sign of pancreatitis.
