Clarithromycin Hexal is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections in the lungs, sinuses, throat, skin, muscles, and stomach ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori.

How to Use

Dosage

Usually one 250 mg tablet or half of a 500 mg tablet twice a day, but your doctor may increase the dose to two 250 mg tablets or one 500 mg tablet twice a day if needed.

Method

Take the tablet by mouth with a glass of water. You can take it with or without food.

Important

The maximum dose is usually 1000 mg per day. Your doctor will reduce the dose if you have severe kidney problems.

  • Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, indigestion
  • Abnormal liver function tests
  • Rash

  • Yeast infections (e.g., in mouth)
  • Vaginal infection
  • Low white blood cell count or increased certain types of white blood cells
  • Allergic reactions
  • Loss of appetite
  • Anxiety, dizziness, sleepiness, tremor
  • Vertigo (feeling of spinning)
  • Hearing loss, ringing in ears (tinnitus)
  • Changes in heart's electrical activity (prolonged QT interval) and palpitations
  • Inflammation of stomach, mouth, tongue
  • Bloating, constipation, burping
  • Dry mouth
  • Blocked bile flow
  • Liver inflammation
  • Increased liver enzyme levels in blood
  • Itching, hives
  • General feeling of unwellness, weakness, chest pain, chills, fatigue
  • Severe gut inflammation (colitis)
  • Certain skin infections (erysipelas)
  • Low platelet count (bruising or bleeding)
  • Psychosis, feeling unreal or foreign, confusion, depression, abnormal dreams, disorientation, hallucinations
  • Seizures
  • Changes in smell, loss of smell or taste
  • Tingling or numbness
  • Life-threatening heart rhythm disorders
  • Prolonged bleeding time
  • Tooth and tongue discoloration
  • Severe liver failure
  • Yellow skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • Severe skin conditions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, DRESS, and acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis
  • Acne
  • Muscle pain or weakness
  • Kidney inflammation, kidney failure
  • Abnormal urine color
  • Vision problems (blurred or impaired vision)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to clarithromycin, other macrolide antibiotics, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take this medicine if you or your family have had certain heart rhythm problems or if you are taking medicines that can cause severe heart rhythm problems.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have severe liver failure and kidney problems at the same time, or if you have very low potassium or magnesium levels in your blood.
  • Do not use if you are taking oral midazolam (a sedative), ticagrelor, ivabradine, ranolazine, ergotamine, dihydroergotamine, cisapride, domperidone, pimozide, terfenadine, astemizole, lovastatin, simvastatin, lomitapid-containing medicines, or colchicine.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you develop severe or prolonged diarrhea during or after treatment, especially if it contains blood or mucus.

  • Contact your doctor or emergency services immediately if you experience sudden difficulty breathing, speaking or swallowing, severe dizziness or fainting, or a severe, itchy rash with blisters or soreness around the mouth, eyes or genitals.
  • Contact your doctor as soon as possible if you develop symptoms of liver problems, such as loss of appetite, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, itchy skin, or abdominal pain.
  • Contact your doctor as soon as possible if you develop pancreatitis, which causes severe pain in your stomach and back.
  • This medicine may cause dizziness or confusion. Do not drive or operate machinery if you experience these symptoms.
