How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual starting dose is 20 mg once daily, but your doctor may adjust it based on your condition.

Method

Take tablets with liquid, with or without food. Swallow with half a glass of water.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 40 mg for most adults, but elderly patients or those with liver problems should not exceed 20 mg per day.

  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Fast, irregular heartbeat and fainting (torsades de pointes)

  • Increased prolactin levels in blood
  • Low potassium levels in blood (hypokalemia), which can cause muscle weakness, twitching, or abnormal heart rhythm
  • Panic attack
  • Teeth grinding
  • Restlessness
  • Seizures
  • Unusual muscle movements or stiffness
  • Involuntary muscle movements (akathisia)
  • Vision disturbances
  • Prolonged QT interval on ECG
  • Heart rhythm disturbances (ventricular arrhythmia)
  • Dizziness when standing up due to low blood pressure (orthostatic hypotension)
  • Nosebleeds
  • Abnormal liver function test results
  • Bleeding disorders including skin and mucous membrane bleeding (ecchymosis)
  • Breast milk secretion in men and women who are not pregnant or breastfeeding (galactorrhea)
  • Irregular menstruation
  • Heavy vaginal bleeding soon after childbirth (postpartum hemorrhage)
  • Painful erections (in men)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to citalopram or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you are using other medicines called MAO inhibitors.
  • Do not take if you have a congenital or abnormal heart rhythm (visible on an ECG).
  • Do not take if you are taking medicines for heart rhythm problems or medicines that can affect heart rhythm.
  • If you have stopped taking MAO inhibitors, you must wait 2 weeks before starting Citalopram Orion.

  • After stopping Citalopram Orion, you must wait 1 week before starting MAO inhibitors.
  • Discuss with your doctor if you have had episodes of mania or hypomania.
  • Discuss with your doctor if you have severe liver or kidney disease.
  • Discuss with your doctor if you have an increased tendency to bleed or if you are pregnant.
  • Discuss with your doctor if you have diabetes, as Citalopram Orion can affect blood sugar levels and your diabetes medication may need adjustment.
  • Discuss with your doctor if you have epilepsy; treatment should be stopped if seizures occur or become more frequent.
  • Discuss with your doctor if you have unusually low sodium levels in your blood.
  • Discuss with your doctor if you are receiving electroconvulsive therapy.
  • Discuss with your doctor if you have had psychosis, as treating depression in psychotic patients may worsen psychotic symptoms.
  • Discuss with your doctor if you have narrow-angle glaucoma or have had glaucoma before.
  • Discuss with your doctor if you have or have had heart problems or a recent heart attack.
  • Discuss with your doctor if you have a slow resting heart rate or know you may have salt imbalance due to prolonged diarrhea, vomiting, or diuretic use.
  • Discuss with your doctor if you experience a fast or irregular heartbeat, fainting, loss of consciousness, or dizziness when standing up, as these may be signs of an abnormal heart rhythm.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or committing suicide, contact a doctor or go to a hospital immediately.
  • Citalopram Orion should not normally be used for children and adolescents under 18 years of age.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Serotonergic. Risk of QT prolongation. A significant adverse effect is low serum sodium level. Increases risk of falls. Consider potential interactions especially with preparations that increase risk of bleeding. (updated 12.2.2024)
