How to Use

Dosage

Typically, you take 20 mg once a day. Your doctor might increase this to a maximum of 40 mg daily if needed.

Method

Take the tablet with a glass of water, with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 40 mg. For elderly or patients with liver problems, it is usually 20 mg per day.

  • Taste disturbances
  • Unusual bleeding
  • Liver inflammation
  • Fever
  • Fatigue, confusion, and muscle twitching, which can be signs of a rare condition called hyponatremia (abnormally low sodium levels in the blood)
  • Seizures or more frequent seizures
  • High fever, restlessness, confusion, tremor, and sudden muscle jerks; these can be signs of a rare condition called serotonin syndrome
  • Swelling of skin, tongue, lips or face, breathing or swallowing difficulties (allergic reactions), sudden swelling of skin or mucous membranes (angioedema)
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding (bleeding from the stomach or intestines)
  • Fast, irregular heartbeat and fainting, which can be symptoms of a life-threatening condition known as torsades de pointes
  • Thoughts of suicide or death
  • Abnormally low platelet count (thrombocytopenia), which increases the risk of bleeding and bruising
  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH)
  • Increased prolactin levels in the blood
  • Low potassium levels in the blood (hypokalemia), which can cause muscle weakness, twitching, or abnormal heart rhythm
  • Panic attack
  • Teeth grinding
  • Restlessness
  • Convulsions
  • Unusual muscle movements or stiffness
  • Involuntary muscle movements (akathisia)
  • Vision disturbances
  • Prolonged QT interval observed on ECG
  • Irregular heartbeat (ventricular arrhythmia)
  • Dizziness when standing up due to low blood pressure (orthostatic hypotension)
  • Nosebleed
  • Abnormal liver function test results
  • Bleeding disorders, including skin and mucous membrane bleeding (ecchymosis)
  • Milk production from breasts in men and non-pregnant or non-breastfeeding women (galactorrhea)
  • Irregular menstruation
  • Heavy vaginal bleeding shortly after childbirth (postpartum hemorrhage)
  • Painful erection in men (priapism)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to citalopram or any other ingredients.
  • Do not take if you are currently taking other medicines called MAO inhibitors.
  • Do not take if you have an abnormal heart rhythm (visible on an ECG).
  • Do not take if you are using medicines for heart rhythm problems or medicines that can affect your heart rhythm.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have had mania or hypomania episodes.

  • Talk to your doctor if you have increased bleeding tendency or are pregnant.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have diabetes, as this medicine can affect blood sugar levels.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have epilepsy, especially if seizures become more frequent.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have low sodium levels in your blood.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are receiving electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).
  • Talk to your doctor if you have had psychosis, as this medicine can worsen psychotic symptoms.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have narrow-angle glaucoma or have had glaucoma.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have heart problems or recently had a heart attack.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you have thoughts of harming yourself or committing suicide.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Serotonergic. Risk of QT prolongation. A significant adverse effect is low serum sodium level. Increases risk of falls. Consider potential interactions especially with preparations that increase risk of bleeding. (updated 12.2.2024)
