How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you exactly how much to take and how often, based on your infection.

Method

Swallow tablets whole with plenty of liquid. Do not chew. Try to take them at the same time each day. You can take them with or between meals, but avoid dairy products or calcium-fortified juices. Drink plenty of fluids.

Important

Your doctor will decide your maximum daily dose. Do not take more than prescribed.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea, diarrhea
  • Joint pain and joint inflammation in children
RARE
  • Muscle pain, joint inflammation, increased muscle tension, and cramps
  • Changes in blood counts (e.g., low white blood cells, anemia, altered platelets)
  • Allergic reaction, swelling (e.g., face, lips, tongue)
  • Increased or decreased blood sugar
  • Confusion, anxiety, strange dreams, depression, hallucinations
  • Numbness, tingling, increased sensitivity, skin numbness, tremors, or dizziness
  • Vision problems (including double vision), ringing in the ears, hearing loss
  • Heart palpitations (fast heartbeat)
  • Liver problems, jaundice (yellow skin/eyes), hepatitis
  • Increased sensitivity to sunlight
  • Kidney problems, blood or crystals in urine, urinary tract infection
  • Rash, itching, hives, small red spots under the skin

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you have previously had a severe reaction to any quinolone or fluoroquinolone antibiotic. Tell your doctor immediately if this applies to you.
  • If you get a severe allergic reaction (like chest tightness, dizziness, nausea, fainting), stop taking the medicine and call a doctor right away.
  • If you feel pain or swelling in your joints or tendons (like in your ankle, wrist, elbow, shoulder, or knee), stop taking the medicine, rest the area, and contact your doctor immediately.
  • If you experience nerve damage symptoms like pain, burning, tingling, numbness, or weakness in your arms or legs, stop taking the medicine and tell your doctor right away.
  • If you feel sudden severe pain in your stomach, chest, or back, go to the emergency room right away, as these could be signs of a serious issue with your main artery (aorta).

  • If you experience mental health changes like depression, psychosis, or thoughts of self-harm, contact your doctor immediately.
  • If you get severe or long-lasting diarrhea, especially with blood or mucus, stop the medicine and contact your doctor immediately.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Risk of QT prolongation. Reduce the dose and/or increase the dosing interval in moderately severe renal impairment. Calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium and aluminium reduce absorption. Increases the risk of tendinitis and aortic injury and valvular heart disease. Consider central nervous system adverse effects, especially lowered seizure threshold and confusion. (updated 4.12.2023)
