How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will prescribe the exact dose based on the type and severity of your infection.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with plenty of liquid. You can take them with or between meals, but avoid taking them with dairy products or fruit juices containing calcium supplements. Try to take them at the same time each day and drink plenty of fluids.

Important

Your doctor will determine the maximum daily dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea, diarrhea.
  • Joint pain (in children and adults), joint inflammation (in children).
  • Fungal infections, increase in certain white blood cells.
  • Loss of appetite, headache, dizziness, sleep problems, changes in taste.
  • Vomiting, stomach pain, heartburn, gas.
  • Rash, itching, hives.
  • Muscle and bone pain, fever, feeling unwell.
  • Changes in blood tests (e.g., liver enzymes, bilirubin).
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction with swelling of the face, lips, or tongue.
  • Symptoms of nerve damage, such as pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness in hands or feet.
  • Tendon inflammation or rupture (e.g., Achilles tendon), joint pain and swelling.
  • Mood changes, depression, confusion, anxiety, strange dreams, hallucinations, or suicidal thoughts.
  • Seizures.
  • Blood sugar changes (too high or too low).
  • Severe or persistent diarrhea with blood or mucus.
  • Vision problems (e.g., double vision), hearing loss or tinnitus.
  • Skin sensitivity to light (rash in sun).
  • Signs of liver damage (e.g., yellow skin, dark urine, itching, abdominal pain).
  • Decrease in white blood cells, increasing infection risk.
  • Heart rhythm problems (e.g., fast heartbeat, ECG changes), shortness of breath, swollen legs.
  • Sudden severe pain in the abdomen, chest, or back (could be a sign of aortic rupture).
  • Severe skin reactions, such as blisters or peeling skin.
  • Bleeding problems (e.g., bruising, clotting disorders).
  • Worsening of myasthenia gravis.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to ciprofloxacin, other quinolones, or if you have had severe side effects from similar antibiotics before.
  • If you experience a severe allergic reaction, such as chest tightness, dizziness, or nausea, stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor immediately.
  • If you feel pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness in your hands or feet (signs of nerve damage), or pain and swelling in joints or tendons, stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor immediately.
  • If you have sudden chest pain, shortness of breath, swollen legs, or heart palpitations, contact your doctor immediately.
  • If you experience mood changes, depression, or suicidal thoughts, contact your doctor immediately.

  • If you have diabetes, monitor your blood sugar carefully, as this medicine can cause your blood sugar to rise or fall.
  • If you get severe or persistent diarrhea with blood or mucus, stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor immediately.
  • Avoid direct sunlight and sunbeds, as your skin may become more sensitive to light.
  • This medicine may affect your ability to drive or operate machinery; make sure you know how it affects you before driving or using machines.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Risk of QT prolongation. Reduce the dose and/or increase the dosing interval in moderately severe renal impairment. Calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium and aluminium reduce absorption. Increases the risk of tendinitis and aortic injury and valvular heart disease. Consider central nervous system adverse effects, especially lowered seizure threshold and confusion. (updated 4.12.2023)
