How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the exact dose and how long to take it based on your infection.

Method

Swallow tablets whole with plenty of liquid. Do not chew. Try to take them at the same time each day, with or between meals. Do not take with dairy products (milk, yogurt) or calcium-fortified fruit juices.

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea, diarrhea
  • Joint pain (in children and adults) or inflammation in children
  • Fungal superinfections
  • Increase in certain white blood cells (eosinophils)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Feeling restless or overly active
  • Headache, dizziness, trouble sleeping, changes in taste
  • Vomiting, stomach pain, indigestion, gas
  • Changes in some blood test values (e.g., liver enzymes, bilirubin)
  • Rash, itching, hives
  • Mild kidney problems
  • Muscle and bone pain, feeling unwell, fever
  • Increase in a certain blood enzyme (alkaline phosphatase)
RARE
  • Muscle pain, joint inflammation, tense muscles, muscle cramps
  • Severe gut inflammation (colitis)
  • Changes in blood cells (e.g., low red or white cells, abnormal platelets)
  • Severe allergic reaction (swelling of face, lips, tongue)
  • High or low blood sugar
  • Confusion, anxiety, strange dreams, depression, seeing/hearing things that aren't there
  • Numbness, tingling, increased skin sensitivity, tremors, spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • Vision problems, including double vision or distorted color vision
  • Ringing in ears, hearing loss
  • Fast heartbeat (palpitations)
  • Wide blood vessels, low blood pressure, fainting
  • Shortness of breath, asthma-like symptoms
  • Liver problems (e.g., yellow skin/eyes, liver cell death)
  • Skin sensitivity to light
  • Kidney problems (e.g., blood or crystals in urine)
  • Fluid buildup, heavy sweating
  • Increased levels of a certain enzyme (amylase)
  • Migraine, coordination problems, unsteady walk, problems with smell, increased pressure in the brain
  • Inflammation of blood vessel walls (vasculitis)
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
  • Small red or purple spots on the skin (petechiae), skin rashes
  • Worsening of muscle weakness (myasthenia gravis)
  • Seizures

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you have had severe side effects from similar antibiotics (quinolones) before. Tell your doctor right away.
  • If you have a severe allergic reaction (chest tightness, dizziness, nausea, fainting), stop taking the medicine and call your doctor right away.
  • This medicine can cause long-lasting nerve, muscle, or joint problems. If you have pain in tendons, muscles, or joints, numbness, tingling, or weakness, or problems with vision, taste, smell, or hearing, contact your doctor immediately.
  • Joint pain and swelling, or tendon problems (inflammation or tears), can occur. Stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor if you feel tendon pain (e.g., in your ankle, wrist, elbow, shoulder, or knee). Rest the affected area.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you feel sudden, severe pain in your stomach, chest, or back, as these can be signs of serious blood vessel problems (aortic aneurysm or dissection).

  • Contact your doctor without delay if you experience sudden shortness of breath (especially when lying down), swelling in your ankles, feet, or stomach, or new heart palpitations (feeling your heart beat too fast or unevenly).
  • If you have epilepsy or other neurological conditions, this medicine can cause seizures. If you have a seizure, stop taking it and contact your doctor immediately.
  • Nerve damage symptoms like pain, burning, tingling, numbness, or weakness in your arms or legs may occur. If you get these symptoms, stop taking the medicine and tell your doctor immediately to prevent permanent damage.
  • This medicine can affect your mood and thoughts. If you feel depressed, anxious, have strange thoughts, or thoughts of harming yourself, contact your doctor immediately.
  • This medicine can affect your blood sugar levels, making them too high or too low. If you have diabetes, check your blood sugar carefully.
  • Diarrhea can occur during or after treatment. If you have severe, lasting diarrhea or blood in your stool, stop the medicine and contact your doctor immediately. Do not take anti-diarrhea medicines.
  • If your eyesight gets worse or you have other eye problems, contact an eye doctor immediately.
  • Your skin will be more sensitive to sunlight and UV light. Avoid direct sunlight and sunbeds during treatment.
  • This medicine can cause liver damage. If you notice symptoms like loss of appetite, yellow skin (jaundice), dark urine, itching, or stomach tenderness, contact your doctor immediately.
  • This medicine can lower your white blood cell count, making you more prone to infections. If you get a fever, feel very unwell, or have signs of infection (e.g., sore throat, mouth pain, or urination problems), see your doctor immediately.
  • It is important to finish the entire course of medicine, even if you feel better. Stopping early can make the infection worse or cause it to return, and bacteria may become resistant.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Risk of QT prolongation. Reduce the dose and/or increase the dosing interval in moderately severe renal impairment. Calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium and aluminium reduce absorption. Increases the risk of tendinitis and aortic injury and valvular heart disease. Consider central nervous system adverse effects, especially lowered seizure threshold and confusion. (updated 4.12.2023)
