How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you exactly how much to take, based on your infection type and severity.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with plenty of fluid. Do not chew them. You can take them with or between meals, but avoid dairy products or calcium-fortified drinks. Drink plenty of fluids during treatment.

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose based on your condition.

Possible Side Effects

  • Nausea, diarrhea
  • Joint pain in children

  • Fungal superinfections
  • Increased eosinophils (a type of white blood cell)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Hyperactivity or agitation
  • Headache, dizziness, sleep disorders, or taste disturbance
  • Vomiting, abdominal pain, indigestion, or flatulence
  • Increased liver enzymes and/or bilirubin
  • Rash, itching, or hives
  • Joint pain in adults
  • Poor kidney function
  • Muscle and bone pain
  • Weakness (asthenia) or fever
  • Changes in blood cell counts (e.g., anemia, altered platelets)
  • High or low blood sugar
  • Confusion, anxiety, strange dreams, depression, or hallucinations
  • Tingling, numbness, tremor, or dizziness
  • Vision problems, including double vision
  • Tinnitus, hearing loss or impairment
  • Rapid heartbeat (tachycardia) or irregular heartbeat
  • Low blood pressure or fainting
  • Shortness of breath, including asthma symptoms
  • Liver dysfunction, jaundice, or hepatitis
  • Photosensitivity
  • Muscle pain, arthritis, increased muscle tension, or cramps
  • Kidney failure, blood or crystals in urine, kidney inflammation
  • Fluid retention or excessive sweating
  • Increased amylase levels
  • Hemolytic anemia (decreased red blood cells)
  • Migraine, coordination problems, unsteady gait, smell disorders, increased intracranial pressure, pseudotumor cerebri
  • Distorted color vision
  • Inflammation of blood vessel walls (vasculitis)
  • Small pinpoint hemorrhages under skin (petechiae)
  • Muscle weakness, worsening of myasthenia gravis symptoms
  • Ventricular arrhythmia and Torsade de Pointes tachycardia
  • Increased INR (blood clotting measure)
  • Intense excitement (mania) or optimism and hyperactivity (hypomania)
  • Syndrome with impaired urine excretion and low sodium levels

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you have previously had severe side effects from other quinolone antibiotics. Tell your doctor immediately.
  • If you have a severe allergic reaction with chest tightness, dizziness, or fainting, stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor immediately.
  • If you experience tendon pain or swelling (e.g., in your ankle, wrist), stop taking the medicine, contact your doctor immediately, and rest.
  • If you feel pain, burning, tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness in your hands or feet, stop taking the medicine and tell your doctor immediately.
  • If you get severe or persistent diarrhea, or diarrhea with blood or mucus, stop taking the medicine immediately and contact your doctor.

  • If you feel sudden, severe pain in your stomach, chest, or back, go to the emergency room right away.
  • If you notice signs of liver damage, such as yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, or itching, stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor immediately.
  • If your vision gets worse or you have other eye problems, contact an eye doctor immediately.
  • Your skin will be more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid direct sunlight and sunbeds during treatment.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Risk of QT prolongation. Reduce the dose and/or increase the dosing interval in moderately severe renal impairment. Calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium and aluminium reduce absorption. Increases the risk of tendinitis and aortic injury and valvular heart disease. Consider central nervous system adverse effects, especially lowered seizure threshold and confusion. (updated 4.12.2023)
