How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the exact dose based on your infection type and severity.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with plenty of water. You can take them with or between meals, but avoid milk products or calcium-fortified drinks.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea and diarrhea.
  • Joint pain in children.
RARE
  • Fungal infections.
  • Headache, dizziness, trouble sleeping.
  • Vomiting, stomach pain, indigestion.
  • Rash, itching, hives.
  • Muscle and bone pain in adults.
  • Confusion, strange dreams, depression.
  • Ringing in ears, hearing problems.
  • Fast heartbeat, changes in heart rhythm.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to ciprofloxacin or other similar antibiotics.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you have previously had severe side effects from other similar antibiotics.
  • Get medical help right away if you feel sudden, severe pain in your stomach, chest, or back.
  • If you have a severe allergic reaction, such as chest tightness, dizziness, or fainting, stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor immediately.
  • If you feel tendon pain or inflammation (e.g., in your ankle or wrist), stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor.

  • If you have symptoms of nerve damage, such as pain, tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness, stop taking the medicine and tell your doctor right away.
  • If you experience mood changes, depression, or suicidal thoughts, stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor immediately.
  • If you experience symptoms of low blood sugar, such as sweating, shaking, or irritability, contact your doctor immediately.
  • If you get severe or persistent diarrhea, or blood in your stool, stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor immediately.
  • If you have symptoms of liver damage, such as yellow skin, dark urine, or stomach pain, stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor immediately.
  • If your vision gets worse or you have other eye problems, contact an eye doctor right away.
  • Your skin may become more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid direct sun and tanning beds.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Risk of QT prolongation. Reduce the dose and/or increase the dosing interval in moderately severe renal impairment. Calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium and aluminium reduce absorption. Increases the risk of tendinitis and aortic injury and valvular heart disease. Consider central nervous system adverse effects, especially lowered seizure threshold and confusion. (updated 4.12.2023)
