How to Use

Dosage

For adults, 200 mg is given over 30 minutes, and 400 mg over 60 minutes. For children, the infusion time is 60 minutes.

Method

The medicine is given as an infusion directly into a vein.

Important

Your doctor will decide your daily dose and how long you need to take it, based on the type and severity of your infection.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting
  • Joint pain in children
  • Local reactions at injection site, rash
  • Temporary increase in certain blood values (transaminases)
RARE
  • Fungal superinfections
  • Increase in eosinophils (a type of white blood cell), increased or decreased blood clotting factors (platelets)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Hyperactivity, restlessness, confusion, disorientation, hallucinations
  • Headache, dizziness, sleep disturbances, taste disorders, tingling or prickling sensation in the skin, unusual sensitivity to stimuli, vertigo
  • Vision problems, including double vision
  • Hearing loss
  • Palpitations (fast heartbeat)
  • Blood vessel widening (vasodilation), low blood pressure
  • Abdominal pain, digestive problems such as heartburn, flatulence
  • Liver problems, increased bilirubin, jaundice (cholestatic jaundice)
  • Itching, hives
  • Joint pain in adults
  • Poor kidney function, kidney failure
  • Muscle and bone pain, feeling unwell (asthenia), fever, fluid retention
  • Increased alkaline phosphatase in the blood
  • Bowel inflammation (colitis) related to antibiotic use (can be fatal in very rare cases)
  • Changes in blood counts (low white blood cells, low red blood cells, low platelets), which can be life-threatening, bone marrow suppression
  • Allergic reaction, allergic swelling (edema), sudden swelling of skin and mucous membranes (angioedema)
  • High blood sugar (hyperglycemia), low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
  • Anxiety reactions, unusual dreams, depression (possibly leading to suicidal thoughts or attempts), mental disorders (psychotic reactions leading to suicidal thoughts or attempts), hallucinations
  • Numbness of skin, tremor, migraine, smell disorders
  • Ringing in ears (tinnitus), impaired hearing
  • Fainting, blood vessel inflammation (vasculitis)
  • Shortness of breath, including asthma symptoms
  • Pancreatitis
  • Liver inflammation, liver cell death (liver necrosis), rarely leading to life-threatening liver failure
  • Photosensitivity, small pinpoint bleeding under the skin (petechiae)
  • Muscle pain, joint inflammation, increased muscle tone, muscle cramps
  • Blood or crystals in urine, urinary tract infection
  • Excessive sweating
  • Increased amylase enzyme levels
  • Coordination problems, unsteady gait, increased pressure in the brain (including pseudotumor cerebri)
  • Distorted color vision
  • Various skin rashes
  • Worsening of myasthenia gravis symptoms
  • Decrease in red blood cells (hemolytic anemia), dangerous decrease in white blood cells (agranulocytosis)
  • Allergic reaction called serum sickness-like reaction
  • Abnormally fast heartbeat, life-threatening irregular heartbeat, changes in heart rhythm seen on ECG (prolonged QT interval or Torsade de Pointes)
  • Effect on blood clotting (in patients taking vitamin K antagonists)
  • Agitation (mania) or strong feeling of optimism and overactivity (hypomania)
  • Syndrome with decreased urine excretion and low sodium levels in blood (SIADH)
  • Loss of consciousness due to severe drop in blood sugar (hypoglycemic coma)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to ciprofloxacin, other quinolone antibiotics, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have previously experienced severe side effects with quinolone or fluoroquinolone antibiotics. Tell your doctor immediately if this applies to you.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are currently taking tizanidine, as it can cause serious side effects like low blood pressure.
  • If you get a severe, sudden allergic reaction with chest tightness, dizziness, nausea, or fainting, stop the medicine and tell your doctor immediately.
  • If you feel pain or swelling in your joints or tendons (like in your ankle, wrist, elbow, shoulder, or knee), stop the medicine, rest the affected area, and contact your doctor immediately. Tendon problems can happen even months after stopping the medicine.

  • If you experience nerve damage symptoms like pain, burning, tingling, numbness, or weakness in your arms or legs, stop the medicine and tell your doctor immediately to prevent permanent damage.
  • If you experience any mental health changes, like feeling anxious, depressed, confused, or having thoughts of harming yourself, contact your doctor immediately.
  • This medicine can affect your blood sugar levels, causing them to go too high or too low. If you have diabetes, monitor your blood sugar carefully.
  • If you get severe or persistent diarrhea with blood or mucus, contact your doctor immediately. Stop the medicine as this can be life-threatening.
  • This medicine can harm your liver. If you notice symptoms like loss of appetite, yellow skin/eyes (jaundice), dark urine, itching, or stomach tenderness, stop the medicine and contact your doctor immediately.
  • This medicine can lower your white blood cell count, making you more prone to infections. If you get a fever, feel generally unwell, or have signs of infection like a sore throat or problems urinating, see your doctor immediately.
  • Your skin will be more sensitive to sunlight and UV light while taking this medicine. Avoid direct sunlight and tanning beds.
  • If your vision worsens or you notice any other eye problems, contact an eye doctor immediately.
  • If you feel sudden severe pain in your stomach, chest, or back, go to the emergency room immediately as these could be signs of an aortic aneurysm or dissection.
  • If you experience sudden shortness of breath (especially when lying down), swelling in your ankles, feet, or abdomen, or new heart palpitations, contact your doctor without delay.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Risk of QT prolongation. Reduce the dose and/or increase the dosing interval in moderately severe renal impairment. Calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium and aluminium reduce absorption. Increases the risk of tendinitis and aortic injury and valvular heart disease. Consider central nervous system adverse effects, especially lowered seizure threshold and confusion. (updated 4.12.2023)
