How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you exactly how much medicine to take, how often, and for how long. The dose depends on your infection.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with plenty of liquid. Do not chew or crush them. Try to take your medicine at the same time each day, with or without food. Avoid taking it with dairy products or calcium-rich drinks (like milk, yogurt, or fortified orange juice) at the same time; take them 1-2 hours before or at least 4 hours after your medicine.

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose based on your infection type and severity.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Joint pain and inflammation (in children)
RARE
  • Fungal infections
  • Headache, dizziness, trouble sleeping, or changes in taste
  • Vomiting, stomach pain, indigestion, or gas
  • Rash, itching, or hives
  • Joint pain (in adults)
  • Muscle or bone pain
  • Confusion, anxiety, strange dreams, depression, or seeing/hearing things that are not there (hallucinations)
  • Numbness, tingling, tremor, or dizziness
  • Vision changes, including double vision
  • Ringing in the ears or hearing loss
  • Fast heartbeat or low blood pressure
  • Shortness of breath or asthma symptoms
  • Liver problems (jaundice, hepatitis)
  • Kidney problems (blood or crystals in urine, urinary tract infection)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to ciprofloxacin, other quinolone antibiotics, or any other ingredients.
  • Stop taking this medicine and tell your doctor right away if you get a severe allergic reaction (chest tightness, dizziness, nausea), new or worsening nerve pain (tingling, numbness, burning), or tendon pain or swelling (especially in your ankle, wrist, elbow, shoulder, or knee).
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, epilepsy, diabetes, heart problems, or a history of tendon issues with other antibiotics.
  • This medicine can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Avoid strong sunlight and tanning beds.
  • Always finish the entire course of treatment, even if you feel better. Stopping early can make your infection worse or lead to antibiotic resistance.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Risk of QT prolongation. Reduce the dose and/or increase the dosing interval in moderately severe renal impairment. Calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium and aluminium reduce absorption. Increases the risk of tendinitis and aortic injury and valvular heart disease. Consider central nervous system adverse effects, especially lowered seizure threshold and confusion. (updated 4.12.2023)
