How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the exact dose, how often, and for how long, based on your infection.

Method

It is given as a slow drip into a vein. Drink plenty of fluids.

Important

Your doctor will decide your maximum daily dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting
  • Joint pain and inflammation in children
  • Rash or reaction at injection site
  • Temporary increase in liver enzymes
RARE
  • Seizures
  • Joint pain in adults
  • Fungal infections
  • Changes in blood cells (e.g., white blood cells, platelets)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Feeling restless, anxious, confused, or having strange thoughts
  • Headache, dizziness, sleep problems, changes in taste or smell, tingling, numbness, fainting, tremors
  • Vision changes, including double vision or distorted color
  • Hearing loss or ringing in ears
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Low blood pressure
  • Stomach pain, heartburn, gas
  • Liver problems (yellow skin/eyes)
  • Itching, hives, severe skin rashes or blistering
  • Kidney problems, blood in urine
  • Muscle or joint pain, muscle weakness or cramps, tendon problems
  • Feeling generally unwell, fever, swelling
  • High or low blood sugar
  • Inflammation of the bowel (severe diarrhea)
  • Problems with coordination or balance, increased pressure in the brain
  • Worsening of muscle weakness (myasthenia gravis)
  • Swollen pancreas
  • Excessive sweating

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to ciprofloxacin or similar medicines, or if you take tizanidine.
  • Tell your doctor if you've had severe side effects from similar antibiotics before.
  • Stop taking the medicine and tell your doctor right away if you have a severe allergic reaction (chest tightness, dizziness, nausea, fainting).
  • If you feel pain or swelling in your joints or tendons, stop the medicine and call your doctor.
  • Go to the emergency room immediately if you have sudden, severe pain in your belly, chest, or back.

  • Contact your doctor right away if you have new shortness of breath, swelling in your ankles, feet, or stomach, or new fast/irregular heartbeats.
  • If you have epilepsy or other brain problems and get seizures, stop the medicine and call your doctor right away.
  • If you feel new pain, burning, tingling, numbness, or weakness in your hands or feet, stop the medicine and tell your doctor right away.
  • If you feel very sad or have other mental health changes, stop the medicine and tell your doctor right away.
  • If you have diabetes, check your blood sugar often as this medicine can change it.
  • If you get bad diarrhea, especially with blood, call your doctor right away and stop the medicine.
  • See an eye doctor right away if your vision changes or gets worse.
  • Avoid strong sunlight and sunbeds, as your skin will be more sensitive.
  • If you have signs of liver problems (like yellow skin, dark urine, or stomach pain), stop the medicine and call your doctor.
  • If you get a fever, feel very ill, or have signs of infection (like a sore throat), see your doctor right away.
  • Finish all your medicine, even if you feel better, to make sure the infection is gone.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Risk of QT prolongation. Reduce the dose and/or increase the dosing interval in moderately severe renal impairment. Calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium and aluminium reduce absorption. Increases the risk of tendinitis and aortic injury and valvular heart disease. Consider central nervous system adverse effects, especially lowered seizure threshold and confusion. (updated 4.12.2023)
