How to Use

Dosage

For secondary hyperparathyroidism, adults usually start with 30 mg once a day. For children (3-18 years), the dose is up to 0.20 mg/kg once a day. For parathyroid cancer or primary hyperparathyroidism, adults usually start with 30 mg twice a day.

Method

Take this medicine by mouth with or right after food. Swallow the tablets whole. Do not chew, crush, or break them.

Important

Your doctor will adjust your daily dose based on your blood tests; no general maximum daily dose is specified.

RARE
  • Hives
  • Swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat (angioedema), causing difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • Unusually fast or strong heartbeat
  • Worsening heart failure (if you already have it)
  • Low blood pressure with worsening heart failure

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to cinacalcet or if your blood calcium levels are too low.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had seizures, liver problems, or heart failure.
  • This medicine can lower your blood calcium, which can be dangerous.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you experience muscle cramps, twitching, numbness, tingling around the mouth, confusion, or seizures, as these could be signs of very low calcium.
  • Low calcium can affect your heart rhythm. Tell your doctor if your heart beats unusually fast or hard, or if you have heart rhythm problems.

  • Do not drive or use machines if you feel dizzy or have seizures.
  • If you notice swelling of your face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat that causes difficulty swallowing or breathing, seek medical help immediately. This could be a severe allergic reaction (angioedema).
