How to Use

Dosage

For secondary hyperparathyroidism, adults usually start with 30 mg once a day. For children aged 3 to under 18 with secondary hyperparathyroidism, the usual starting dose is up to 0.20 mg per kg of body weight per day. For parathyroid cancer or primary hyperparathyroidism, adults usually start with 30 mg twice a day.

Method

Take this medicine by mouth with food or just after eating. Swallow the tablets whole. Do not chew, crush, or divide them, even if there is a score line.

Your doctor will adjust your dose based on blood tests; always follow their instructions.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea and vomiting (usually mild and go away quickly)

  • Unusually fast or strong heartbeat (due to very low calcium levels)
  • Worsening heart failure (in patients who already have it)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to cinacalcet or any other ingredient in the tablets.
  • Do not take this medicine if your blood calcium levels are too low. Your doctor will monitor your calcium levels.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had seizures (epilepsy), liver problems, or heart failure.
  • This medicine can cause very low calcium levels, which can be dangerous. Tell your doctor right away if you have muscle cramps, twitching, numbness, tingling around your mouth, fingers, or toes, seizures, confusion, or fainting.
  • Low calcium can affect your heart rhythm. Tell your doctor if your heart beats unusually fast or hard, or if you have other heart rhythm problems.

  • Tell your doctor if you start or stop smoking, as it can affect how the medicine works.
  • If you feel dizzy or have seizures while taking this medicine, do not drive or operate machines.
  • Do not take this medicine with etelcalcetide.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you have swelling of your face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat, which can cause trouble swallowing or breathing.
