How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual starting dose is 30 mg (one tablet) once daily for secondary hyperparathyroidism, or 30 mg twice daily for parathyroid cancer or primary hyperparathyroidism. For children aged 3-18, the starting dose is up to 0.20 mg/kg once daily. Your doctor will tell you the exact dose.

Method

Take the tablets by mouth with food or immediately after a meal. Swallow them whole; do not chew, crush, or divide them.

Important

Your doctor will regularly check your blood and adjust your dose as needed.

  • Hives (urticaria)
  • Swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat, which can cause difficulty swallowing or breathing (angioedema)
  • Unusually fast or strong heartbeats, which may be due to very low blood calcium levels (QT prolongation and ventricular arrhythmia secondary to hypocalcemia)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Cinacalcet Orion if you are allergic to cinacalcet or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take Cinacalcet Orion if your blood calcium levels are too low. Your doctor will monitor your calcium levels.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had seizures, as the risk of seizures can be higher.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart failure.

  • Seek medical help immediately if you experience muscle cramps, twitches, spasms, numbness or tingling in your fingers, toes, or around your mouth, or seizures, confusion, or loss of consciousness. These can be signs of very low calcium.
  • Low calcium levels can cause heart rhythm problems. Tell your doctor if your heart beats unusually fast or strongly, or if you have heart rhythm issues, especially if you take other medications known to cause them.
  • Inform your doctor if you start or stop smoking during treatment, as this can affect how Cinacalcet Orion works.
  • Children under 18 with parathyroid cancer or primary hyperparathyroidism should not take Cinacalcet Orion.
  • Cinacalcet Orion can cause dizziness and seizures. Do not drive or operate machinery if you experience these symptoms.
