How to Use

Dosage

For the first two weeks, you will receive 5 mg per kilogram of your body weight once a week. After that, the dose is 5 mg per kilogram of your body weight every other week.

Method

This medicine is given as a slow drip into a vein (infusion) over one hour. You must also take probenecid pills and receive a saline solution drip into your vein before each dose to protect your kidneys.

Important

Do not take more than the recommended dose, which is calculated based on your body weight, and do not shorten the time between doses.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to cidofovir, probenecid, or sulfa medicines.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had kidney problems.
  • This medicine can harm your kidneys; your doctor will check your kidney function often.
  • If you have diabetes, tell your doctor, as this medicine may lower your eye pressure too much.
  • You need regular eye exams during treatment to check for irritation or swelling. Tell your doctor right away if you have eye pain, redness, itching, or vision changes.

  • Men must use birth control during and for 3 months after treatment. Women who can get pregnant must use effective birth control during and for 6 months after treatment.
  • This medicine does not prevent HIV from spreading to others; continue to take precautions.
  • This medicine is not for children.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you take, especially those that can harm your kidneys, such as certain HIV, antibiotic, or antifungal drugs. These should be stopped at least 7 days before starting Cidofovir.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
  • Do not breastfeed while using this medicine.
