How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or nurse will use one or more applicators to clean the skin area that needs treatment.

Method

A doctor or nurse will gently rub the sponge of the applicator on your skin. For most areas, they will rub for 30 seconds. The skin must air dry completely before any procedure. The solution is for external skin use only.

Important

This medicine is for single use only per procedure. Do not use more than one applicator for the same treatment unless your doctor or nurse says so.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) which can include swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, red and itchy rash, wheezing or difficulty breathing, weakness, dizziness, a metallic taste in the mouth, or fainting. Seek immediate medical attention.
  • Skin rash, irritation, itching, redness, blisters, dry or inflamed skin, pain at the application site.
  • Eye irritation
  • Pain
  • Blurred or reduced vision
  • Chemical burns, eye injury, or chemical skin burns in newborns/infants

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to chlorhexidine gluconate or any other ingredient in ChloraPrep Colored, especially if you have had allergic reactions to chlorhexidine before.
  • ChloraPrep Colored is only for use on the skin, not inside the body.
  • Keep away from eyes and sensitive areas like mucous membranes (e.g., mouth, nose, genitals) to avoid irritation. If it gets in your eyes or sensitive areas, rinse immediately with plenty of water.
  • Do not use on open wounds or damaged skin.
  • Do not use in the inner ear or near nerve tissue (like the brain or spinal cord).

  • Always apply gently to the skin. Rubbing too hard or using too much on fragile or sensitive skin can cause rash, irritation, itching, dry/flaky skin, or pain. If you see these signs, stop using it right away.
  • This solution is flammable. Do not use near open flames, hot surfaces, or sparks. Make sure your skin is completely dry before starting any medical procedure that involves heat or electricity (like electrocautery).
  • Avoid prolonged skin contact. Do not let the solution pool in skin folds or under the patient, or on linens/clothing, as this can cause chemical burns, especially in newborns. Remove any wet materials like drapes before use.
  • Use with caution in newborns, especially premature babies, as ChloraPrep Colored can cause chemical skin burns.
  • Tell your doctor or nurse if you have recently had a vaccine or a skin allergy test (patch test).
  • In rare cases, ChloraPrep Colored can cause a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) with symptoms like sudden drop in blood pressure, hives, swelling of face/lips/tongue, wheezing, or loss of consciousness. If you notice these, stop using it and seek medical help immediately.
