How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or nurse will decide your dose based on the infection and your age. For adults, it's usually 750 mg – 1.5 g per day, divided into 2-4 doses. For children, it's 30–100 mg per kg per day, divided into several doses.

Method

This medicine is usually given as a drip into a vein (infusion) or as an injection into a vein or muscle.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 6 g.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Pain, swelling, and redness at the injection site.
  • Changes in blood test results (e.g., increased liver enzymes, changes in white or red blood cell counts).
RARE
  • Skin rash, itchy raised rash (hives).
  • Diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain.
  • Fungal infections, like oral thrush.
  • Severe diarrhea, sometimes with blood or mucus, and stomach pain (pseudomembranous colitis).
  • Fever.
  • Other changes in blood tests (e.g., low white blood cells, increased bilirubin, low platelets, increased kidney function markers).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to cephalosporin antibiotics or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have had a severe skin rash, skin peeling, blisters, or mouth sores after using this or another cephalosporin antibiotic.
  • Do not use if you have had a severe allergic reaction to another type of penicillin-like antibiotic.
  • Contact a doctor immediately if you develop a severe allergic reaction (e.g., rash, swelling, difficulty breathing) or a severe skin reaction (e.g., blisters, peeling skin, fever).
  • Tell your doctor or the person taking samples if you are having blood or urine tests, as this medicine can affect the results.
