How to Use

Dosage

The usual daily dose for adults and adolescents is 750 mg to 1.5 g.

Method

A doctor or nurse usually gives this medicine as an infusion (drip into a vein) or as an injection into a vein or muscle. The daily dose is divided into 2 to 4 administrations.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 6 grams.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Pain, swelling, and redness at the injection site or along a vein.
  • Increased liver enzyme levels (seen in blood tests).
  • Changes in white blood cell count (neutropenia or eosinophilia, seen in blood tests).
  • Decrease in red blood cells (anemia, seen in blood tests).
RARE
  • Rash, itchy bumpy rash (hives).
  • Diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain.
  • Decrease in white blood cells (leukopenia, seen in blood tests).
  • Increased bilirubin level (a substance produced by the liver, seen in blood tests).
  • Positive Coombs' test (seen in blood tests).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to cefuroxime, other cephalosporin antibiotics, or any other ingredients.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had a severe skin rash, peeling skin, blisters, or mouth sores after taking cefuroxime or other cephalosporin antibiotics.
  • Inform your doctor if you have had a severe allergic reaction to other beta-lactam antibiotics (like penicillin).
  • Seek immediate medical help if you develop severe allergic reactions such as a raised itchy rash, swelling of the face or mouth, or difficulty breathing.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you develop severe skin reactions such as a widespread rash with blisters, peeling skin, fever, or swollen lymph nodes.

  • Be aware of fungal infections (like thrush) which can occur with this medicine, especially if used for a long time.
  • Watch for severe diarrhea with blood or mucus, stomach pain, and fever; tell your doctor immediately if this happens.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, especially aminoglycoside antibiotics, diuretics (like furosemide), probenecid, and oral anticoagulants, as they can interact with Cefuroxime Orion Pharma.
  • This medicine can make birth control pills less effective; use another form of birth control (like condoms) while taking this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Do not drive or operate machines if you feel unwell.
  • If you need blood or urine tests, tell the person taking the sample that you are on Cefuroxime Orion Pharma, as it can affect test results.
