How to Use

Dosage

Adults and adolescents usually receive 750–1500 mg two, three, or four times a day.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give this medicine as a drip or injection directly into a vein, or as an injection into a muscle.

Important

No more than 6 grams per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Pain, swelling, and redness at the injection site or around a vein.
  • Increased liver test values in blood tests.
  • Changes in the number of white blood cells in blood tests.
  • Decrease in red blood cells (anemia) in blood tests.
RARE
  • Rash, itchy bumpy rash (hives).
  • Diarrhea, nausea, or stomach pain.
  • Decrease in white blood cells in blood tests.
  • Increased bilirubin levels in blood tests.
  • Positive Coombs test in blood tests.
  • Fungal infections, such as thrush, especially with long-term treatment.
  • Fever.
  • Inflammation of the kidneys or blood vessels.
  • Rapid breakdown of red blood cells (hemolytic anemia).
  • Decrease in blood platelets in blood tests.
  • Increased urea and creatinine levels in blood tests.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to cephalosporin antibiotics or other similar antibiotics (like penicillins).
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you develop a severe rash, peeling skin, blisters, or sores in your mouth. These can be signs of a serious allergic reaction.
  • If you are allergic to lidocaine, you should not receive this medicine if it's prepared with lidocaine for a muscle injection.
  • This medicine can make birth control pills less effective. Use extra birth control, like condoms, and ask your doctor for advice.
  • Tell your doctor or nurse if you are having blood or urine tests, as this medicine can affect the results.

  • Do not drive or operate machinery if you do not feel well.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you develop severe diarrhea with blood or mucus, severe stomach pain, or fever.
